Description
The Controller is responsible for the management of all company finance and accounting operations, budget and forecasting, investment oversight, audit activities, cash flow planning, and tracking operational performance for Baltimore Public Media. In addition, the Controller is accountable for the oversight of Financial Systems & Procedures, and Compliance and Legal requirements ensuring the management of company resources in the most beneficial way to maximize funding. The Controller serves as a credible, knowledgeable, and trusted resource to the President & General Manager, Senior Leadership Team, and the Board.
Essential Functions:
- Oversee the Finance department to ensure the department’s core services operate using general accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and timely, accurate financial transactions, statements, reports, and analyses. Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to executives, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
- Coordinate all annual audit activities and the preparation of the 990.
- Ensure cash flow is appropriate for the organization’s operations. Generate weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as needed to monitor, evaluate, and optimize cash-flow and liquidity.
- Provide oversight for and manage all budgets, forecasts and internal financial plans and processes. Help develop the leadership team by providing counsel on departmental business plans, management challenges and relationships. Work effectively with the leadership team to monitor, track, and evaluate key performance indicators that impact the achievement of annual operating plan and key financial goals.
- Oversee applicable required regulatory reporting to assure compliance in a cost-effective manner and minimize legal liabilities. Manage the corporate insurance portfolio and ensure the company meets critical regulatory, legal, and bank covenant compliance benchmarks.
- Work in close partnership with the President and the Leadership Team to provide strategic vision, leadership and direction that support and strengthen the impact of the company’s mission, strategic goals, priorities, and critical projects.
- Drive best financial, employment, and other practices by publicizing standard operating procedures, keeping the leadership team and staff up to date by generally serving as a point of reference.
Requirements:
- BA/BS in Accounting or Finance preferred;
- 5-7 years accounting experience preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Staff, Senior Leadership Team, and the Board.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of GAAP, Word, Excel, Accounting and Database software. QuickBooks experience is highly preferred.
