KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio is Seattle’s NPR news station. We are an independent, nonprofit news organization producing award-winning journalism, podcasts, and events in service to the 3.9 million people in our coverage area. As a self-sustaining service of the University of Washington, our mission is to create and serve a more informed public.
KUOW has an exciting opportunity for a Non-Permanent Editor to work on its daily news shows. The Editor will work with producers to create long- and short-form stories that reflect KUOW’s editorial priorities and audio and online standards; assign and edit news reports and interviews; and work closely with show staff on the development of interviews, sound-rich features and series for web and broadcast.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Creates original, enterprise radio programming for broadcast and podcasts by editing the work of KUOW producers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Coaches producers in the creation and delivery of interviews and features. – 30%
• Edit interviews and features for broadcast and online with an emphasis on maintaining the focus of the story and interview best practices. – 30%
• In consultation with the supervising producer, reviews story pitches by producers and assigning stories as appropriate. – 10%
• Assist in the development and implementation of KUOW’s editorial priorities. – 10%
• Apply KUOW editorial standards to all broadcast and published content – 10%
• Coordinate coverage of breaking news at the direction of the show Supervising Producer. – 5%
• Perform other duties as assigned including – 5%
• Use audio editing software to edit and mix stories as needed.
• Work off hours as needed to insure coverage of critical breaking news
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of professional journalism experience at a large market level
• Two years radio broadcast editing or equivalent
• Demonstrated leadership skills in a news department
• Excellent planning and interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to work under deadline in a team-oriented approach
• Experience in digital audio editing and engineering
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.
Preferred:
• Knowledge of the Puget Sound area
• Supervisory experience or equivalent combination of training and education
