Position Summary:

Your Public Radio is looking for a dynamic news leader who will motivate an award-winning news team while demonstrating Your Public’s values of integrity, community, and diversity.  The News Director, who reports to the Executive Director of News, will manage the daily workflow of reporters and editors to include deadline driven editing, breaking news coverage and long-term story planning.  We are looking for someone who understands the importance of covering public policy, health, housing and wealth disparities and is able to identify the jewel in the rough stories. Your toolkit will include the skills to coach both veteran and fledgling reporters on story concepts and shepherd them to well-written, sound-rich multi-platform pieces. The successful candidate will be a journalist with a firm foundation in news writing, reporting and editing. Above all the candidate understands the deeply entrenched ethical standards of public radio journalism that the devoted public radio audience expects.

Essential Functions:

  • Vet, assign and deploy reporters; plan daily coverage. Weekend work may be required during breaking news.
  • Edit radio scripts for accuracy, flow and ensure adherence to highest ethical standards
  • Schedule and lead discussions on long term story planning and series ideas.
  •  Ensure that deadlines are met and that radio and digital stories produced are accurate, and technically sound for flagship shows and online.
  • Support the WYPR/Baltimore Banner podcast, The Daily Dose as assigned.
  •  Provide support as needed to the news digital editor/producer.
  • Pitch and report your own stories when time allows.

Liaison with The Baltimore Banner:

  • In collaboration with the Executive Dir. of News, liaison with editors, to ensure proper collaboration on news stories and other news products.
  • Editorial oversight and writing for the flagship “The Daily Dose” podcast, a collaboration between Your Public Radio and the Baltimore Banner
  • Manage flow of communication and progress on story collaborations.
  • Additional duties to be determined as we begin to collaborate on news projects.

 Preferred experience:

  • Knowledge of NPR news and public radio.
  • Journalistic experience – 5 years, some of which must be public radio or broadcast.
  • 3+ years’ experience in a newsroom leadership role preferred.
  • Strong judgment and understanding of journalistic standards, practices and ethics required.
  • Excellent management skills and experience; substantial supervisory roles in a daily news organization.
  • Proven record of telling stories for diverse communities
  • Ability to manage people and give constructive story feedback.
