Description

WFAE’s Grants and Planned Giving Officer will research, write, edit and track grant proposals and reports for institutional donors and foundations, conducting donor prospect research and assisting with donor stewardship efforts. This individual will also have oversight of WFAE’s planned giving program, including, but not limited to promotion of program, outreach to planned gift prospects, estate planners/lawyers and more.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Writes, edits and gathers attachments for grant proposals to foundations and corporations for general operating support and program development.
  • Prepares interim and final reports to foundation, corporate and government grantors.
  • Helps track funding requirements and deadlines.
  • Develops target list of new, current and lapsed foundation and corporate giving prospects and prepares summary memos for each.
  • Creates and maintains database of foundations and grant-making corporations.
  • Maintains profiles of general operating support and special funding projects.
  • Accompanies key staff members, including WFAE’s President/General Manager on solicitation visits and funding proposal meetings.
  • Oversees WFAE planned giving program.
  • Researches potential planned gift prospects from WFAE database and prepares summary memos as needed.
  • Meets with planned gift prospects, estate lawyers and estate planners to promote WFAE planned giving program/organizational needs, etc.
  • Maintains a regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Education:  The preferred candidate will possess a college degree or equivalent knowledge or experience in business, the arts, or fundraising. One year of basic research skills and a development background is preferred.

 

Experience:  Requires thorough knowledge of fundraising concepts and operations. Must have extensive experience in writing, research and stewardship.

Technical Skills:  Requires general computer skills as well as professional level experience using Microsoft Office Suite. Strong presentation skills and experience using fundraising software is preferred.

Language Skills: Requires exceptional written and oral presentation skills in order to assist with gaining commitment, representing WFAE to foundations and potential donors, and communication to colleagues.  Must have excellent spelling and grammatical skills. Must understand development budgeting, researching, writing, and be able to devise reports and letters.

Interpersonal Skills:  The incumbent must work effectively with people, know how to represent WFAE gracefully through letters, telephone and in person with tact as this is crucial to influencing outside contacts. Works with persons of higher rank on issues requiring explanation, discussion, and persuasion. Needs to understand and respect individual donors and foundation donors thoroughly. Must be able to work and communicate with colleagues well to develop strategies to increase prospects and giving.  Requires a creative and analytical thought perspective.

Math Skills: Must have excellent problem solving skills and knowledge of project budgeting.  Must be able to develop long term and strategic plans, set goals and monitor progress toward accomplishment.

Physical or Mental Demands: This person must be able to work well under deadline pressure, demonstrate patience, understand the needs of various others, and maintain a clear sense of priorities in a demanding environment.  Must be able to see, hear, speak, reach, grasp, operate and input data into a computer, sit and stand for long periods of time and move freely about the building. A high level of concentration skills and the ability to be detail-oriented are of value. Must be able to communicate in person with individuals or groups and answer and speak on the phone. Must be able to travel locally when necessary using personal or public transportation to assist in meetings and solicitation visits, which may require irregular hours on a regular basis.  Professional appearance is a must. Light travel may be required for conferences or meetings with grant funding organizations/WFAE donors.

 

PREFERRED CRITERIA

 

Experience: Professional experience working with foundation and/or corporate giving in fundraising/development department of a high performing, non-profit organization.

 

License or Certification:  Valid driver’s license preferred.
