WAMU 88.5 is seeking an Assistant Director of Membership, Fundraising.
WAMU 88.5 is Washington DC’s leading public radio station for NPR news and information. It’s our mission to connect Washingtonians with each other and the world through balanced, enlightening, inspiring and entertaining programs of the highest quality.
Assistant Director of Membership, Fundraising directly supports the Director of Membership and primarily manages on-air and direct mail membership fundraising as well as serving as the main liaison for membership with programming, production, web and marketing staff.
This person uses a creative, entrepreneurial, disciplined, and results-oriented approach to fundraising efforts to implement strategies that will advance listener involvement – serving the priority of securing maximum new and re-acquired member participation, maximum sustainer participation, upgrades in previous giving, and growing campaign revenue to a level consistent with top performing public media stations.
This position reports to the Director of Membership.
This position operates with minimal supervision, and frequently requires evening and weekend shifts.
Minimum pay rate is $75,000 per year annually; additional compensation commensurate with experience.
What you’ll do:
- Lead and manage all aspects of on-air fundraising to support the strategy for achieving goals both financial and participation including live campaigns, pre- and post-campaign on-air promotions and spots, and the station’s year-round membership on-air presence for all WAMU services and platforms.
- Work collaboratively with the Membership Director and outside consultant to develop strong and evolving strategies, messaging and scripting for each campaign effort.
- Ensure strong execution of host and producer scheduling, overall and daily strategies; timing and promotions of challenges, stunts and tactics, thank you gift strategy and design.
- Along with the outside consultant, serve as a second lead producer and, assist in managing and preparing talent and other producers; making staff at all levels aware of campaign activities and how it may impact them.
- Manage aspects of the vehicle donation program and relationship with CARS to include on-air promotion and campaign integration.
- Manage implementation of all telemarketing solicitations on behalf of the station.
- Supervise the Membership Coordinator for all activities pertaining to the planning and development of on-air fundraising campaigns for WAMU including giveaway and premium research, testimonial coordination, and working with partners on campaign offers.

Your experience and attributes:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- 4-6 years of relevant experience in public broadcasting fundraising or in a related area, to include 1-3 years of experience in a functional lead, team lead or supervisory capacity in broadcasting or related area.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate and mange fundraising initiatives.
- Understanding of public broadcasting fundraising concepts practices, and procedures.
- Possess a complete understanding of mechanics and philosophy of membership fundraising including membership campaign production, year-round positioning announcements major donor spots, planned giving spots, and other membership activities.
- Demonstrated experience in on-air fundraising and other membership campaigns.
- Experience with public radio/public TV on-air talent.
- Demonstrated technical, broadcast production and editing experience.
- Demonstrated computer skills and database management experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work with others in developing, planning and implementing interdepartmental goals and strategies.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills as well as customer service savvy.
- Must be able to push, pull, lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
