Crosscut is looking for a new Audience Engagement Manager. Someone with a passion for strategy, social media and journalism. A strong writer, creative thinker and strong leader. 

As the Audience Engagement Manager, you’ll develop and drive Crosscut’s engagement strategies across digital platforms, including expanding and deepening our relationship with our audience. Support organizational efforts to expand our reach across the Pacific Northwest, foster and drive civic engagement and inspire a smarter world while demonstrating CPM’s values of integrity, community, innovation and diversity.

Salary Range: $82,500-$93,500 annually

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  • Develop and operate Crosscut’s innovative audience engagement and growth strategy for our nonprofit public media newsroom
  • Manage and oversee the Audience Engagement team and Independent Contractor support to handle — social media and newsletter
  • Work with editors and reporters to create engagement plans and strategies to increase reach and impact for major projects and ongoing reportage
  • Be an advocate in the newsroom for audience engagement and continuing research into who our audience is, who we’re reaching and who we’re missing
  • Analyze post results and rapidly make adjustments to ensure success
  • Lead the Audience Engagement team to ensure all brand needs are met by scheduling the team to provide excellent service and responding to tweets, Facebook messages and comments in a timely manner, including during evenings and weekends
  • Ensure all posts meet brand and quality standards
  • Coordinate social media messaging across departments and communicate scheduling and priorities with the wider team and organization
  • Monitor Crosscut.com, newsletters, social media, email analytics and reader feedback to provide regular reports to editors and the executive teams
  • Develop and maintain communities related to and affected by Crosscut’s reporting to cultivate a more engaged audience for Crosscut’s work, and help bring in new sources and story ideas
  • Work directly with editorial leadership to inform Crosscut editorial strategy, based on website performance, social, third-party platforms, reader feedback and other audience insights
  • Liaise closely with Marketing & Communications department to ensure cohesion and sync across all public-facing digital channels
  • Plan Crosscut Audience Engagement ahead of company events to ensure proper coverage
  • Promote SEO best practices to ensure reach across all Crosscut products
  • Follow social media trends, test innovative ideas, explore new platforms and implement best practices
  • Helps to bring a level of urgency and influence across organization regarding emerging technologies as tools to amplify stories, enhance engagement and drive conversion
  • Collaborate with other team members to foster a positive and productive culture and contribute toward the overall growth of CPM

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Strong news judgment and a deep interest in the news
  • Ability to manage short and long-term projects in an environment with shifting deadlines
  • Deep knowledge of social media, SEO, website and email analytics using tools like Parse.ly, Google Analytics, CrowdTangle and Hearken
  • Strong collaboration + communication skills and embrace of industry tools including Slack, Trello and Google
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Knowledge of AP style, impeccable grammar and copy editing skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communication or related field, or equivalent experience, required
  • At least 3 years of experience managing social media accounts, preferably for a news organization
  • At least 2 years of experience managing a team required
  • Prior experience using social media for philanthropy preferred
  • Strong project management experience, organizational skills and accountability required
  • Experience creating audio, video and visual content for social is preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work some evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
  • Ability to regularly type on a keyboard
  • Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
