Based in the state capitol, Boise State Public Radio is the premier NPR affiliate in Idaho. Through 18 transmitters and translators, it reaches 2/3rds of the state’s population. Its headquarters, situated along the Boise River, feature all-digital studios and some of the most loyal listeners in the market. The city of Boise is ranked as one of the “most livable” cities in America. It features a historic downtown, with a vibrant arts scene and an active, outdoors lifestyle. There are hundreds of sunny days and miles of trails in the foothills above the city. Boise State Public Radio is committed to continually expanding its news footprint, most recently by joining a groundbreaking new collaborative reporting project focused on the role of guns in American life.
The Reporting Fellow, part of the Guns & America collaboration led by WAMU in Washington, D.C., will participate as a member of the inaugural cohort of the two-year Audion Fellowship, a first-of-its-kind professional development opportunity for early- to mid-career journalists designed to grow and strengthen public media’s pool of talented, cross-platform journalists.
The Audion Fellow at Boise State Public Radio will build a new beat reporting on the many ways we in the Mountain West region interact with guns, creating empathetic, surprising journalism about this divisive issue. As one of 10 Audion Fellows reporting for the Guns & America collaborative from partner stations across the U.S, the Boise-based Fellow will be employed by Boise State Public Radio and will work every day with the Guns & America lead editing team in Washington, D.C. As a member of the Boise State Public Radio newsroom, the Fellow will also work with KBSX newsroom leadership.
In addition to a full-time salary and benefits at Boise State, the highly competitive Audion Fellowship offers cutting-edge training on digital innovation, investigative reporting techniques and audio storytelling. Fellows will also come together for twice-yearly, week-long professional development seminars, to be held in various cities throughout the country. Because of the full commitment required to fulfill the responsibilities of this position, Fellows may not be employed elsewhere or engaged in full-time study outside of training offered under the terms of the Audion Fellowship and Partner Station hiring agreements.
