The Opportunity
WPR is seeking a strong people leader and dynamic development professional to lead our development department and build relationships on behalf of WPR and its “friends” group, the Wisconsin Public Radio Association (WPRA). The successful candidate will have the ability to lead by example as we build a deeper culture of philanthropy, taking a robust major and planned giving effort to the next level, while sustaining our strong membership, business sponsorship, and other financial support efforts.
WPR is established at the top tier of public radio stations for innovative programming and membership programs. We are on the way to achieving similar success in securing business support, and we have a growing major and planned giving effort. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will lead WPR Development to excellence in all areas, with special emphasis on reaching our potential in major giving. The CDO will have wide visibility across the organization, the community, the state and the public radio system, as you design, develop and deploy new and innovative fundraising approaches.
The Organization
Wisconsin Public Radio has a strong commitment to innovation, in both broadcast and new media technologies. It has been a pioneer in public radio talk programming and is home to several nationally syndicated programs. WPR’s two statewide networks, with a combined total of 37 stations, making us the second largest public radio network in the U.S. We have a long and successful history of serving significant audiences and generating strong listener support and are headquartered in Madison on the University of Wisconsin campus.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Wisconsin Public Radio, the CDO will design and execute an integrated fundraising effort including membership, planned giving, major gifts, on-air fundraising (pledge), business sponsorship (underwriting), grant proposals, audience services and support, and fundraising events. The CDO leads a talented team of approximately 35 development professionals, leading them to achieve revenue goals in excess of $12,000,000 per year. As a member of WPR’s senior leadership team, the CDO will play an important role in strategic and financial planning and works closely with all departments of the organization and partners. This key position also provides executive leadership as liaison to the Wisconsin Public Radio Association, the 501(c)3 “friends” group associated with WPR.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have a proven track record of achieving revenue targets and deep knowledge of fundraising practices and ethics along with demonstrated ability to research, prospect, cultivate, and manage major donors. Will also have exemplary interpersonal and communication abilities, the highest level of professional and personal character and integrity, outstanding people and financial management skills, a passion for the promotion and attainment of WPR’s mission, and a natural instinct for securing donors. Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years progressively more responsible management experience with a broad portfolio in not-for-profit organizations or the equivalent is required.
Compensation
This is a full-time (100%) academic staff position. The salary is competitive and will be commensurate with your experience and qualifications.
