WVIA is the PBS and NPR affiliate serving over 22 counties in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. For over 50 years WVIA has been committed to serving the people by offering informational, educational, and entertaining content that enriches and expands viewpoints and serves as a catalyst for positive change. WVIA television channels include WVIA TV, WVIA PBS Kids 24/7, and WVIA Create. WVIA’s radio channels include WVIA Radio, WVIA HD2 and the Chiaroscuro Channel. WVIA’s programs can also be found streaming live and on-demand on wvia.org and the WVIA app. We are located in Pittston, PA, just minutes from Interstate 81 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
What is the role?
We have an outstanding executive-level opportunity for a Chief Development Officer (CDO), who will serve as the “right hand” to the President and CEO and is responsible for the leadership, strategic direction and management of all fundraising efforts at WVIA
As a member of the executive management team, the CDO will work closely with the CEO, Board of Directors and collaborate with senior management to facilitate a culture of philanthropy and grow a sustainable base of support for the organization, in accordance with the WVIA mission.
What are the role responsibilities?
- Provide leadership and direction to the Chief Executive Officer, board of directors and development team in the effective execution of all development activities for WVIA, including individual giving, institutional giving, events, underwriting and planned-giving with a keen focus on major gifts and endowments.
- Lead the strategic direction and budgeting process of various development departments (Membership, Corporate development, institutional giving and Major Giving) to deliver maximum net revenue while strengthening the WVIA brand.
- Be a trusted partner to the Chief Executive Officer and the Board; ensuring maximum value from their diverse connections, effectively utilizing their time and personal participation in all strategic fundraising efforts.
- Be visible and accessible to the donor community; represent WVIA and department initiatives by cultivating and deepening relationships throughout the NE & central PA philanthropic community and beyond.
- Identify, cultivate and successfully solicit major gift prospects.
- Supervise and lead the work of a diverse team of professionals, including but not limited to building the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the WVIA development team in annual giving, major gifts, donor relations, grants, educational initiatives and stewardship.
- Attend all board meetings and other meetings as requested by CEO.
- Ensure adherence to organizational and legal policies and procedures, including the FCC
- Additional duties as assigned by the President & CEO.
What are the role requirements?
- Bachelor’s degree in business or fundraising with a fundraising certification (CFRE). An advanced degree is preferred.
- At least five (5) years of demonstrable, successful and challenging fundraising experience including capital campaigns.
- At least five (5) years management experience supervising a fundraising team
- Must have previous successful board and committee engagement experience, including 3-5 years of experience working with Boards in a fundraising context.
- Demonstrated success in developing proposals and securing funding.

- Excellent computer skills with Knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and Salesforce CRM.

- A gifted mentor and team-builder; able to encourage and grow talent and collaborative work in service to great ideas.
- Effective project-management orientation; facilitates and models clear communication, flexibility and a solutions-focus approach.
- Working knowledge of public broadcasting.
- Knowledge of the ethics, nature and dimensions of philanthropy activities.
- Experience with developing and maintaining achievable financial projections and budgets.
- Proven success in identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual major gifts.
- Ability to work well under pressure and adapt easily to changing situations and priorities, exercise good judgment and stay focused on overarching goals.
- Ability to effectively communicate the value of a WVIA membership and WVIA sponsorship.
