KUOW has an outstanding opportunity for a Creative Manager to lead the organization’s visual strategies and design production, applying creative solutions to develop and design visual materials that enhance KUOW’s storytelling. The ideal candidate for this position is a highly strategic visual storyteller, with experience developing creative strategies and graphics for many mediums including but not limited to: video, animation, interactive digital design, graphic and infographic design, logo artwork, presentation and live event visual design, and print design.

This position reports to the Director of Marketing. This person will lead KUOW in testing and implementing new visual strategies including but not limited to: art direction and video production for our YouTube platform, maintaining and enforcing brand standards across all visual mediums (digital graphics, print pieces, animation and video), providing creative strategy and leading design production for key marketing and fundraising initiatives, managing and reviewing creative work completed by in-house video producer and external agencies, leading visual strategy for live virtual and in-person events, and collaborating with editorial staff on visual story components such as interactive reporting pieces, videos, infographics, and more.

This is a full-time position based in our Seattle office. The position will be 100% remote until KUOW’s office is able to reopen, based on local Covid-19 regulations.

Essential Duties

Creative Strategy and Graphic Design Production (50%)

This person will provide creative strategy and graphic production for key marketing, editorial and fundraising initiatives.

  • Concept and create original logo artwork for key KUOW products including but not limited to podcasts, newsletters, editorial series, major fundraising campaigns, and major brand awareness initiatives.
  • Concept and create original social media templates and artwork, as needed, for social and editorial teams
  • Create and manage a system for organizing and archiving all KUOW design assets and materials
  • Provide other design support as needed for marketing and fundraising initiatives

Interactive / Video Strategy and Production (30%)

This position will lead KUOW’s work to experiment with new ways to interact with our audience digitally. Duties in this area include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead, build, scale and operationalize in-house video production studio for KUOW
  • Create and manage video visual standards and brand guidelines, training Audio/Video producer and reviewing their work
  • Create and manage motion templates in order to scale KUOW video work in the coming years
  • Manage and run video production process (strategy brief, script, style frames, storyboard, motion, edit, sound design, upload).
  • Create and implement strategy for original thumbnail art for YouTube page, testing strategies to optimize views on past content
  • Collaborate with Business Support to build a sponsored video process, including sponsorship for live streaming events
  • Produce interactive designs, infographics, and videos for newsroom and editorial teams

Ensuring Adherence to KUOW Visual Standards Across Mediums (15%)

This position will be responsible for ensuring KUOW staff, contractors, freelancers, and contracted agencies are knowledgeable and adhere to KUOW visual standards across all mediums.

  • Review graphic, print, social media, merchandise and video work for adherence to KUOW visual standards and brand identity
  • Providing feedback or editing materials as needed to ensure adherence to KUOW visual standards and brand identity
  • Lead digital literacy efforts across the station, training staff on simple graphic production, using style guides, and using visual templates

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

Requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree working in graphic design field AND 4 years relevant experience
  • Passion for KUOW’s mission to create and serve a more informed public
  • Commitment to racial equity and ability to work with diverse teams
  • Expert proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite products including Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects, Premiere Pro, InDesign, etc.
  • Proficient in video editing
  • Proficient in creating original animations
  • Proficient in print design, or experience reviewing print design work
  • Experience creating logo artwork for brands or products
  • Experience managing a team of designers and/or acting as a liaison to agencies

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

  • Familiarity with public media and/or experience working at media organization, whether in fundraising, marketing or editorial
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially PowerPoint and Word formatting tools
  • Experience with interactive digital storytelling a plus
  • Experience working with bulk email tools such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud, MailChimp, Constant Contact, Marketo, HubSpot, etc.
  • Experience with Content Management Systems
  • Basic HTML knowledge
