About Billy Penn

Billy Penn is looking for an intrepid journalist who wants to take a leading role in moving local news forward by helping coordinate a newsroom that informs and engages with Philadelphians.

With a small team that covers everything from breaking news to urban life to food and fun, Billy Penn’s editorial footprint comprises a website with original reported articles (sometimes also produced for radio); a strong social media presence on multiple platforms; a daily email newsletter; and a community events program.

SCOPE OF POSITION

This new, full-time position will report to the Billy Penn Editor. This person will do the first read on drafts filed by reporters, obtain artwork, and produce freelancers’ articles for online publication. This role will be the point person for Billy Penn’s popular weekday and Sunday morning newsletters, overseeing their daily construction and ensuring readers are getting the most out of them.

This person will be an integral part of launching new editorial strategies and programs, such as a 12-month editorial calendar and themed email series that help Philadelphians learn about and explore the city.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in weekly editorial meetings and brainstorm with other team members
Do the first read on drafts filed by reporters
Ensure there is artwork to run with each article
Produce articles when filed by freelancers or other non-staff members
Build on reporter contributions to finalize the Billy Penn weekday newsletter
Write and build the Billy Penn Sunday newsletter
Create and maintain 12-month editorial calendar
Help develop and execute new editorial products, including themed email series
Help curate news via Billy Penn’s social media accounts
Assist with breaking news if needed
Contribute ideas to and help execute Billy Penn events and panel discussions
Qualifications
Education: Expertise in newsgathering methods and practices.

Experience: Minimum 5 years of journalism experience preferred, including at least 2 years experience as editor of others. Experience with strategic planning and civic engagement is a bonus.

Software/Technical Skills: Computer literacy; knowledge of online writing and editing standards; social media literacy; understanding of data visualization software.
