Description

WFYI Public Media is seeking a digital producer to develop and execute new audience reach and impact initiatives through online and social media strategies.

This is a new position, joining a team of more than 20 journalists, editors and community engagement specialists and the Side Effects Public Media regional health reporting team. Together we aim to give more people information they can use to navigate life and address gaps in policies meant to serve everyone. Newsroom priorities include health, education, criminal justice, government and economic equity. We are looking for someone excited to improve existing practices and products and make new ones – to give current and new audiences more information that they can use to help them navigate their daily lives.

This position will require the selected candidate to either live in, or move to the state of Indiana, understanding that travel/commute time will be necessary.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the newsroom’s social media schedule.
  • Work with the Daily Editor to manage publication workflow and keep the website updated.
  • Copy edit digital stories for spelling, grammar and AP style, as needed.
  • Experiment with new and emerging social networks and digital spaces – from Twitter Spaces to TikTok and Instagram Reels.
  • Create digital content for online and mobile platforms, alternative-format stories, on-demand audio, photos, videos, infographics and data visualizations for breaking news and in-depth reporting and investigations.
  • Work with other members of the digital team to ensure strategies respond to audience input.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Ability to excel in a team environment with a high level of personal motivation.
  • Experience growing and maintaining an audience through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and Reddit.
  • Ability to track and analyze social media performance.
  • Comfortable working with content management systems.
  • Well-versed in AP Style.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Field recording, sound editing and studio production skills.
  • Photography and video experience.
  • Knowledge of Canva, Photoshop, Premiere and other photo and video editing software.
  • Understanding of SEO best practices.
  • Experience with community engagement-fueled journalism.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent work experience required.
  • 1-3 years newsroom experience, with reporting and social media and digital experience preferred.
