WMRA-FM, licensed to James Madison University (JMU), seeks qualified applicants for the position of Director and General Manager. This is an opportunity to lead a vibrant and significant station in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with a broadcast range spanning Winchester to Lexington to Charlottesville, Virginia. Duties and Responsibilities
The Director and General Manager is responsible for overall leadership in supporting the mission and vision of WMRA, while also housing and providing guidance for the classical station WEMC, the student-run station WXJM and Valley Voice, a reading service for the visually impaired staffed by volunteers.
Leadership: Advances the mission of WMRA and WEMC by understanding community needs and station responsibility, sustaining both the “big picture” and the day-to-day goals and activities. Anticipates future station needs and opportunities based upon industry trends and developments, with input from employees and constituents and is actively involved in leadership activities in the local communities and broadcast region.
Development: Engages and cultivates long-term relationships with station supporters, with an emphasis on major donors and foundations to secure the future of the stations. Builds and sustains community support to maintain the stations’ level of excellence.
Programming: Upholds best journalistic practices and understands the value of the creative process. Leads the stations into new areas of community engagement and digital initiatives.
Management: Serves as a team-builder, coach and mentor. Understands the role everyone plays in the organization and is committed to diversity.
Qualifications
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred. Five years of senior management experience in public broadcasting with proven effective interpersonal and leadership skills. Proven success in corporate and individual fundraising for public radio and a desire to develop new sources of funding. A knowledge of public radio programming and funding and a passion for and commitment to the mission of public radio.
All WMRA and WEMC staff are employees of the university. This is a full-time Administrative and Professional Faculty position reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters.
