Position Summary: Director of Digital Media

The Director of Digital Media will join Youth Radio’s media leadership team to launch and lead our national network of youth journalists. It is a new and key position for which we seek a journalist with extensive experience producing high-quality multiplatform content.

Youth Radio is a youth-centered, innovative production company that is cultivating a larger, more engaged audience and building new channels of content for social and online platforms. With an eye on trending news and culture, you’ll make fast decisions about which stories to advance, and the best approach for maximum impact. You’ll work closely with youth reporters and artists to create compelling and fun visual media content. You’ll shape story packages to build audience engagement and the growth of Youth Radio’s public profile.

Position Responsibility:

  • Lead production of a daily stream of smart, engaging media content designed for distribution across the social web, and smartly packaged on our website.
  • Cultivate partnerships with social platforms and outlets with wide distribution, reaching new and engaged audiences.
  • Lead development of a workflow that produces curation of multi-media content from around the country, featured on multiple platforms and aggregated on our website.
  • Grow audience and engagement across YR platforms.
  • Manage projects across teams within Youth Radio.
  • Produce special programming, as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of successful digital journalism experience.
  • Experience leading a team that’s achieved major wins in digital journalism.

 

Required Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge:

  • Established as a journalist, with experience leading digital journalism and producing a mix of top quality, high impact content for multiple platforms ie: journalism, arts and culture, preferably youth focused
  • Fluent in real-time reporting in a fast-paced environment: integrating trending topics, journalistic and citizen sources, audience comments and needs, and a broad range of cultural references to create highly relevant visual and interactive media that adds to or advances fast-moving news or culture items.
  • Experience using video, photos, and graphics to create content that stokes conversation.
  • Experience in rolling out special coverage including investigative features, series, or deep, single-topic reporting.
  • Track record of creating engaging social content in connection with traffic spikes and overall audience growth and engagement
  • Knowledge and understanding of content management systems and web publishing best practices including writing for the web, content tagging, and SEO.
  • Experience with building strategy, products and workflows based on real-time analytics and social sharing tools.
  • Experience working with developers and designers on imaginative and arresting digital products (basic competency in front-end design would be a huge plus!)
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a team that includes young people as lead producers
  • Strong manager and team leader/builder, with the ability to effectively manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Proactive, organized, efficient, detail-oriented, accountable.
