Summary

Capital Public Radio is seeking an experienced Environment Reporter to join our team. As CapRadio’s Environment Reporter, you will cover environmental and related issues significant and relevant to our audience. You will deliver relatable content across all CapRadio platforms, including our statewide network for political coverage, CPRN. Environmental topic areas include: natural resources; climate science; public health; energy; the economy; the impact of national issues and policies on California and how California shapes national environmental policy.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Production of a minimum of three long-form (4-6 mins) environment features each month in addition to newsmaker interviews, newscast spots and superspots as needed
  • Maintains expertise on environment and energy issues and policy in California and nationwide as well as a database of sources; utilizes knowledge to create timely, in-depth journalism
  • Creates content for digital platforms, including social media sites
  • Contributes to CapRadio’s talk show Insight and collaborates on documentaries for The View From Here
  • Proactively files for NPR and other national outlets
  • Participates in on-air fund drives
  • Backup host and anchor

 

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Extensive knowledge of environmental issues
  • Advanced reporting abilities; must be able to produce material of NPR style and quality
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to distill complex subject matters
  • Strong team player who collaborates well in a diverse group environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multi-task
  • Deep understanding of social media platforms
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or in a related field, or equivalent work experience for at least 5 years. Public radio experience ideal
  • Proficient in use of audio editing software, such as Adobe Audition
  • Travel as assigned for news coverage
