WTVS Detroit Public Television (DPTV) is the viewer-supported PBS member station serving the nation’s 11th largest television market.  We operate Channels 56.1, 56.2 and 56.3, and are carried on cable and satellite systems throughout Southeast Michigan and over a thousand communities in Canada.   We also operate WRCJ 90.9 FM, the classical and jazz radio station licensed to the Detroit Public Schools. We are actively pursuing dynamic and diverse team members to join us in the role of Great Lakes Bureau Chief  in Detroit, MI.

What You’ll Do:

Through a multi-year grant from the Erb Family Foundation, Detroit Public Television’s Great Lakes Bureau (GLB) provides daily content to the Great Lakes Now website and social media portals from partner organizations as well as original content produced by DPTV. The GLB Chief will also oversee content curation, and live streaming coverage of important Great Lakes-related content and develop relationships with other environmental journalists, editors, scholars, researchers and academics.  The position will be the project manager and will lead on all content and deliverables related to the bureau, its partners, and its mission across a variety of platforms – on-air, online, and through social media.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Post original and curated content daily on multiple platforms.
  • Develop a Great Lakes “beat” of trusted sources to inform daily content.
  • Maintain a deep and up-to-date knowledge of Great Lakes issues across multiple U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
  • Build relationships with government officials, business leaders, association personnel, scientists, educators, and elected leaders involved in a wide range of issues related to the Great Lakes Basin.
  • Design multi-station campaigns and lead an editorial collaboration among public media radio and television stations to expand coverage of Great Lakes-inspired content.
  • Produce live, multi-camera events and programs for distribution online and on-air.
  • Produce taped interviews and testimonials, both in studio and in the field, to create web and broadcast packages.
  • Research, write, and rough cut short and long form video projects.
  • Research, write and publish to the web.
  • Evaluate and edit content submitted from third parties, including video, audio, visual, and written materials.
  • Create and reconcile production project budgets with support from Supervising Producer.
  • Enlist support and coordinate social media and marketing of the bureau and its products within DPTV and among participating stations.
  • Recommend long-form and broadcast products in collaboration with the Executive Producer.
  • Coordinate with Development to pursue additional project funding.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills; including clear storytelling skills
  • Excellent people skills, able to work effectively with other members of a team and other departments as well as with prospects and existing clients
  • Ability to provide constructive criticism to contributors and volunteers to achieve high quality deliverables
  • Ability to manage projects and resources effectively
  • Ability to work independently under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Ability to contribute creative ideas
  • Excellent organizational ability with strong attention to details
  • Ability to complete tasks within budget and time constraints and prepare necessary reports

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Broadcast, Journalism, or related field of study or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years broadcast journalism experience preferred
  • 5+ years live, multi-camera production experience preferred
  • 5+ years of experience with Adobe products, Premier Pro, and CatDV preferred
  • 5+ years of experience editing video, copy editing, and writing
  • Ability to work a varied schedule
  • Passion for great lakes and the great lakes region
  • Ability to travel locally and internationally (to Canada)
