The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications seeks an innovative, experienced, and driven meteorologist to join our weather team. This position will prepare, present, and deliver weather content through the College of Journalism and Communications Media Properties, including but not limited to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network of stations, associated websites, social media accounts or mobile products. We are seeking an experienced professional that can connect to and motivate the diverse multi-market and multi-state population we serve and instruct.

 

About the Opportunity

The Multimedia Meteorologist will prepare and present daily forecast products to be distributed on radio, television, the internet and mobile or social media applications. These products are not limited to strictly forecasting, but also to any element necessary to ensure the weather content provided by the Division of Media Properties is of the highest quality and constantly updated to maintain relevancy in the marketplace for the entire state of Florida.

 

The Multimedia Meteorologist should be able to interpret data, reports, maps, photographs, or charts to predict long or short-range weather conditions, using computer models and knowledge of climate theory, physics, and mathematics.

 

This position will mentor a group of student interns in their development and progress; coach and train students how to produce and present a weather forecast for television, radio, and social media. The Multimedia Meteorologist will teach students how to interpret weather reports or maps for analysis, distribution, or use in weather broadcasts, using computer graphics.

 

The Multimedia Meteorologist will also need to assist the Chief Meteorologist in daily preparation of weather content. Prepare weather reports or maps for analysis, distribution, or use in weather broadcasts for the Chief Meteorologist. Gather data from sources such as surface or upper air stations, satellites, weather bureaus, or radar for use in meteorological reports.

The College of Journalism’s Division of Media Properties, includes seven broadcast stations, allowing students from throughout the College to gain experience in a competitive broadcast and multimedia environment. More than 200 students work in news, sports, production, management positions, web design, promotions and advertising for the radio and television stations each semester.

Commensurate with experience

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Undergraduate degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, geography or other communication-related course of study.
