POSITION TITLE: Morning Edition/Host Reporter

BRIEF OVERVIEW OF POSITION:

The *Morning Edition Host/Reporter* will host Morning Edition and produce on-air content based in the YPR

Billings office. Applicants must be able to (with an NPR style) conduct both live and recorded interviews, generate story ideas, and put together spot news and feature news reports. This position will be on the front lines expanding YPR’s podcast offerings, including a daily morning news digest, and shaping long-term series and investigative projects. Hosting responsibilities include creating, producing and regional news content within

NPR’s newsmagazines. The Morning Edition Host/Reporter reports directly to the YPR News Director. Candidates should embrace working under tight deadlines and working both independently and part of a team.

DEPARTMENT: Yellowstone Public Radio/KEMC

COMPENSATION: Hourly

SALARY: Salary range of $20.50 to 21.50 hourly, commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications

GENERAL STATEMENT:

Yellowstone Public Radio (KEMC) provides in-depth news, public affairs and cultural programming to a large portion of Montana and northern Wyoming; more specifically, news that focuses on meaning and detail, public affairs that offers complete expression of ideas including opportunities for listener participation, and cultural programs that express heritage and innovation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sound gathering, editing, and production for broadcast on-air and on-line, often under tight deadlines
  • Conduct both live and recorded interviews, generate story ideas, and put together spot news and feature news reports.
  • This position will be on the front lines expanding YPR’s podcast offerings, including a daily morning news digest, and shaping long-term series and investigative projects.
  • Hosting responsibilities include creating, producing, and hosting regional news content within NPR’s newsmagazines

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, broadcasting, media, or a related field
  • 3 or more years of progressively responsible experience in radio, investigative reporting, broadcasting, or directly related experience
  • Experience as an on-air host, reporter, and/or producer in broadcasting
  • Ability to make independent news decisions in the selection, writing/rewriting, and placement of news stories within a newscast for on-air delivery
  • Ability to adapt quickly and professionally when breaking news interrupts the news gathering and delivery routine
  • Knowledge of journalism ethics and professional standards of objectivity, fairness, and balance
  • Knowledge of sound gathering, editing, and production for broadcast on-air and online
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong public speaking, writing, interviewing, production, and editorial skills
  • Ability to complete deadline driven assignments on time
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to work with audio editing software such as Adobe Audition
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must be a self-starter who will initiate projects/assignments under the direction and supervision of the YPR news director
  • Must work calmly under pressure
  • Must be able to adapt quickly and professionally when breaking news interrupts the news gathering and delivery routine
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have an authoritative, friendly, confident, conversational on-air “voice” that fits seamlessly into an NPR/public radio style
  • Ability to make excellent news decisions in the selection, writing/rewriting, and placement of news stories/stacking within a newscast for on-air delivery
  • Strong computer skills and typing proficiency

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3 or more years of progressively responsible experience in radio, investigative reporting, broadcasting, or directly related experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues related to the Intermountain West
  • Previous public radio newsmagazine hosting experience
  • Vehicle ownership
  • Photography and video capture and editing skills
  • Proficiency with social media as a tool for reporting and promotion
