Description
KBUT, Community Radio for the Gunnison Valley, is seeking a resourceful, multi-talented journalist to manage and grow our local/regional news department.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Produce daily local newscasts and oversee contributor pieces.
- Develop story ideas, track issues and events.
- Develop and maintain a database of local news sources.
- Oversee and produce news-related website and social media posts.
- File several short spot news pieces per week.
- Produce 2-3 “sound-rich” news features per month.
- Contribute stories to Rocky Mountain Community Radio and other news collaborations.
- Provide breaking and emergency news coverage as needed.
- Provide management, editing, and guidance to news staff.
- Handle occasional fill-in host duties for Morning Edition and weekly public affairs program.
- Provide live hosting and panel moderation for occasional remote news broadcasts.
- Participate in all KBUT pledge drives and fundraising events, helping both on the air and off.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A four-year degree in journalism or equivalent. Work experience may be substituted for a degree in some cases.
- Minimum three years full-time professional journalism experience, preferably in a multi-platform news environment.
- Understanding of and appreciation for rural Colorado.
- Broad journalistic knowledge and ability to report on multiple subjects and beats.
- A curious mind.
- Ability to write for radio, the web, and social media.
- Superb grammar and spelling; knowledge of AP Style.
- Experience with broadcast and web production, audio editing, field recording, news writing, basic photography.
- Good voice, excellent pronunciation, strong vocal delivery.
- Appreciation for the programming and values of public radio.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage simultaneous tasks.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills; readiness to successfully interact with volunteers, staff, and the public.
- Responsive to constructive feedback.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Professional appearance and demeanor.
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
- Computer literacy:
- Adobe Audition or similar audio editing software.
- Microsoft Office Suite.
- WordPress or similar content management systems.
- Social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook).
- Adobe Photoshop a plus.
- Broadcast automation systems such as Audio Vault a plus.
KBUT is an independent, 32-year-old radio station in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. We air a mix of NPR, local news and public affairs, and “free-form” music programmed by local DJs. We broadcast from the ski town of Crested Butte and also serve the college town of Gunnison and a mix of resort and ranch communities. We’re the only daily source for local news in the region.
This is a full-time exempt position. The salary range is $32,000 to $36,000, depending on experience, and includes health and dental, generous vacation, flex-time, and more.
