KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio is Seattle’s NPR news station. KUOW is adding an Online Editor/Producer to its growing newsroom. This editor/producer would work with reporters to turn their radio stories into web gold.

About you: You come from journalism, and you pride yourself in helping reporters with their leads, writing structure and nut grafs. You can anchor breaking news, and write breaking news if necessary, and you enjoy working with others on a team. You write fantastic headlines, and you consider the entire package of a story: How the headline plays off the image plays off the story plays off social. BASIC FUNCTION

Edit stories for KUOW.org, identify visuals, write compelling headlines.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

-Edit a range of stories submitted by reporters.
-Work with radio reporters on presenting their stories online.
-Identify or craft visual opportunities for stories.
-Write effective headlines and engage in headline brainstorming.
-Flesh out audio interviews into written stories.
-Contribute content to social channels.
-Perform other duties as assigned.

Position reports to the Online Managing Editor.

Requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    Desired:

  • Experience either reporting or editing in a newsroom setting.
  • Self-starter who can troubleshoot problems.
  • Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment.
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to professionally represent the
  • station.
  • Ability to direct breaking news on web.
  • Ability to work one weekend day a week as needed.
  • Understand photo copyright law
  • Knowledge of the Puget Sound/Western Washington region
