KUOW is hiring a Temporary Web Editor/Producer for its growing newsroom. This editor/producer would work closely with other members of KUOW’s digital team to edit stories, maintain our Covid blog, write excellent headlines, and produce stories for our social media platforms.

BASIC FUNCTION

Edit stories for KUOW.org, identify visuals, write compelling headlines.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Edit a range of stories submitted by reporters.
  • Work with radio reporters on presenting their stories online.
  • Identify or craft visual opportunities for stories.
  • Write effective headlines and engage in headline brainstorming.
  • Flesh out audio interviews into written stories.
  • Contribute content to social channels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position reports to the Online Managing Editor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field and two years of professional experience in journalism or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires experience in creating content for online presentation, including writing, editing and working with content management systems.
  • News editing experience.
  • Self-starter who can troubleshoot problems.
  • Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment.
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to professionally represent the station.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to direct breaking news on web.
  • Ability to work one weekend day a week.
  • Understand photo copyright law.
  • Guide coverage of a beat(s)/area of expertise/broad variety of assignments – break stories;
  • Maintain a wide variety of sources;
  • Post breaking news and developing stories relevant to Washington state, with a focus on the Puget Sound region;
  • Cultivate sources and collect and verify information by adhering to KUOW’s Ethics Policy; Develop an online audience and identify new opportunities for engagement working with the Social Media Producer and Director of Community Engagement;
  • May travel at times; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
