JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Opportunity:

The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications is seeking a part-time OPS Host to work for the Division of Media Properties including news/talk NPR station WUFT-FM, serving 19 counties in North Central and Mid-Florida and WUFT Classic, the 24-hour classical formatted radio signal that serves the Gainesville-Ocala, Florida market, on-air and online.

 

The on-air host will serve as the primary fill-in during “Morning Edition” (6 a.m. – 10 a.m. weekdays) and “All Things Considered” (4 p.m. – 6 p.m. weekdays) to assist with staff vacation, holiday coverage and special event coverage. This position is not anticipated to see payable hours on a regular weekly basis.  This is for “fill in” talent on an as-needed basis.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary on-call host as-needed for NPR’s “All Things Considered” and/or “Morning Edition” programming, with the ability to work nights, weekends, holidays and other times, as needed.
  • Comfort with and ability to be a board-op in a live broadcast environment. Familiarity with Axia or similar board is a plus.
  • Report, write, produce, prepare and deliver live on-air continuity breaks and weather from WUFT studios (TMAI etc.)
  • Edit and produce underwriting content on an as-needed basis in a style consistent with NPR, for use by WUFT and/or other outlet(s) as directed by editors and/or news director.
  • On occasion, serve as back-up to create logs and promos, with the ability to edit and save to Wide Orbit or similar broadcast automation system.
  • Develop a positive and open working relationship with hosts, producers, reporters and editors to facilitate a seamless on-air experience for listeners and supporters of the station.

 

Additional duties may also include live and special coverage of:

  • Hurricane season coverage with potential segment inserts in multiple dayparts.
  • Fund-drive and fundraising events during multiple hours and in multiple formats.

EXPECTED SALARY:

$15 per hour

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Three to five years of experience as an on-air host and board operator.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with public media / non-commercial public radio (NPR) is a plus
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Familiarity with on-air hosting and production in radio Master Control environment
  • Familiarity with digital audio editing software
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with entire organization
  • Familiarity with Adobe Audition
