Description
The Philanthropy Officer works with senior Advancement staff, as well as KEXP leadership, board members, and key volunteers, to actively identify and qualify potential major donors, cultivate and nurture positive external relationships, and solicit major gifts in support of KEXP’s programming and other funding priorities. The Philanthropy Officer is responsible for securing leadership annual and major gifts and also for qualification of pipeline prospects.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
- Builds and manages a portfolio of 120-150 major gift prospects capable of making gifts of $10,000 and above.
- Proactively qualifies KEXP major donor leads through cold calls and emails (approximately 25 or more contacts per week).
- Ensures 100-140 substantive contacts are made each year with major gift prospects (an average of two to three visits per week).
- Develops and implements techniques to start cold relationships and moves them through the donor commitment continuum to a gift conversation.
- Develops and implements a personalized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategy for each qualified major gift prospect.
- Solicits at least 20-30 major gifts per year, ranging from $2,500 to $100,000 (or more) each.
- Clearly and professionally articulates KEXP’s vision and funding priorities, both verbally and in writing, to prospects and donors.
- Prepares written proposals, informational materials, and other collateral needed to secure major gifts.
- Participates cooperatively in both KEXP’s and the University of Washington’s prospect management and tracking systems.
- In collaboration with KEXP Community Engagement staff, determines cultivation and stewardship activities that allow for prospect qualification and follow-up.
General Organizational Responsibilities:
- Maintains thorough understanding of KEXP organizational policies, including employee handbook, procedures, expense reporting, and payroll submission; follows policies and leads by example.
- Actively participates in our culture of philanthropy, which honors the important role our donors, volunteers, business and community partners play in the life of KEXP. Collaborates across teams and departments to steward donors on behalf of KEXP and actively seeks opportunities to integrate philanthropy into their role within KEXP operations, programs, and projects.
Supervision Received: Reports to the Associate Director of Advancement, Major Giving.
Supervision Exercised: Directly supervises interns and volunteers as needed.
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above.
Position Qualifications:
- Proven ability in cultivating, soliciting, and closing major gifts or the equivalent, including sales and marketing.
- Ability to develop fundraising strategies and plans that integrate into the organization’s mission, priorities, and goals, both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Exceptional ability to organize and motivate staff as well as external advocates and volunteers; high energy level, enthusiasm, and flexibility required.
- Ability to travel locally, regionally, and nationally post-pandemic.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends on occasion.
- A valid Washington driver’s license and personal transportation is required.
- Solid computer skills (including proficiency in relational databases and Microsoft Word and Excel) for the generation of correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, and forms.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook calendar management; ability to learn and adapt to new business software programs as needed.
- Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments.
- Experience building community and conducting outreach on behalf of an organization.
- Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color, in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process.
- An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on under-invited communities, either through lived experience and/or training and education.
- Commitment to advancing justice and equity in the arts with a passion for community building.
- Outstanding attention to detail.
- Commitment to maintain confidentiality and a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to take initiative and use independent judgment within established policy and procedural guidelines.
- Strong self-motivation and independence in carrying out responsibilities, organizing and prioritizing multiple tasks, and meeting deadlines.

- Deep knowledge, appreciation for, and understanding of KEXP programming and mission.
- Ability to embody the community-oriented spirit of KEXP to both internal and external constituents.
Physical Requirements: Long periods of being in a stationary position; operating a computer and other office equipment; frequently moving to/from various work areas; frequently communicating by phone and email; frequently remaining in a stationary position during meetings, discerning meeting content, expressing oneself, and exchanging accurate information; frequently moving to/from off-site meeting and/or event locations; occasionally moves supplies and/or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
Working Conditions: Primary location in typical business office environment, with frequent meetings and event attendance at a variety of off-site locations. The position is currently remote due to COVID-19 but in the future will be onsite with the possibility of some work from home.
Compensation & Benefits: This full-time, exempt position includes an annual salary of $70,000-73,000 depending on experience as well as a generous benefits package which includes medical/dental/vision coverage (premiums 90-100% employer paid), retirement plan with matching, and much more.
