WUNC is hiring a President & General Manager.
WUNC Radio provides quality news, information and entertainment programming to a broad listening audience that includes North Carolina, the United States and the world. WUNC serves North Carolinians from Greensboro to the Outer Banks through a network of seven stations, with a weekly cume of over 300,000 listeners.
This position is located in Chapel Hill and Durham, NC.
The President and General Manager is responsible for the management, growth and sustainability of North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC, the public radio broadcast service of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. WUNC serves more than 300,000 weekly listeners in over 50 North Carolina Counties, from Greensboro to the Outer Banks. North Carolina Public Radio consists of seven radio stations, with its main studios in Chapel Hill, in addition to studios in Durham’s American Tobacco Historic District, Greensboro and the Capitol bureau.
The President and General Manager reports to WUNC Public Radio LLC’s Board of Directors and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Vice Chancellor of Communications. The President has an active working relationship with the WUNC Public Radio LLC Board of Directors through regular meetings and informal interactions to communicate financial status, strategic opportunities and challenges, and on-going accomplishments and activities.
The President is responsible for the overall management of WUNC. This includes:
- Providing strong staff leadership;
- Leading the strategic direction of the organization, focusing on audience expansion and depth, and ensuring North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC continues to provide excellent content across all platforms;
- Overall management of fundraising, marketing, information technology, engineering, business administration, legal and compliance matters, and human resources;
- Implement DEI best practices within the station and supporting an inclusive work environment; and
- Oversight of community relations and fostering strong relationships within the community and industry.
The Candidate: The President will be a professional who knows and understands the nature and purpose of public broadcasting within the context of a higher education environment. Leading candidates will have:
- Demonstrated ability to lead people effectively with a commitment to excellence;
- Ability to listen, build consensus, and provide motivation;
- Experience effectively working with Boards of Directors through constant communication and board support;
- Ability to work effectively with WUNC staff, board of directors, volunteers, and members of the University;
- Superior, proven oral and written communication skills and the ability to sell ideas and concepts to various constituencies, internal and external. Strong presentation skills in one-on-one executive briefings and large audience settings;
- Successful and creative risk-taking abilities, sound business disciplines, and strategic thinking;
- Demonstrated ability to establish and execute long-term strategic planning;
- A thorough understanding of today’s media landscape, and an ability to lead through transitions and challenges by innovating and adapting to changing markets or competition;
- Experience with and understanding of the opportunities and risks associated with digital media;
- Experience engaging and communicating with an array of stakeholders, influencers and community leaders; and
- A high level of expertise and commitment in DEI best practices, including creating an inclusive workplace and engaging effectively to advance understanding, growth and maintain inclusion across organizational structure.
Minimum Education & Experience Required:
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience.
For candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, communication, public policy, or related field (or foreign degree equivalent) and minimum of five years’ experience in senior management positions in radio, public broadcasting or a related field with demonstrated supervisory experience or greater of relevant experience in substitution.
