Journalism, Democracy, and Community

 

Rhode Island Public Radio (RIPR) seeks a highly skilled and collaborative independent producer to work on a limited multi-platform series about the role of journalism and media in society. The Journalism, Democracy, and Community series is a collaboration with the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and is made possible through the “Democracy and the Informed Citizen” Initiative,” with generous support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

 

What you should possess: a passion for audio in all its forms; a keen ear for sound and storytelling; a community oriented and inclusive mindset; the ability to build audiences into the production process; excellent editorial judgment; a willingness to experiment; a willingness to edit collaboratively; a comfort with social media platforms; multicultural sensitivity.

Journalism, Democracy, and Community is an initiative to examine the challenges for local and national media outlets as they inform a democratic, civically-engaged populace and to advance new ways to connect journalism to communities. It will include a podcast series, radio segments, a public event, and the piloting of Hearken, a new technology designed to connect reporters with local citizens and communities around relevant topics. The initiative will involve journalists, Pulitzer Prize winners, scholars, public humanities practitioners, and public audiences.

 

Position Time Frame and Logistics:

  • Part-Time, February 2018 – September 2018

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the production process of six (6) podcast episodes and one public event;
  • Collaborate with the News Director and the General Assignment Reporter to create broadcast appropriate segments;
  • Perform soup-to-nuts production tasks, including identifying and interviewing sources, booking, prepping hosts, writing scripts, researching and fact-checking, processing tape and making it come to life;
  • Collaborate with outside contributors, including residents and citizens from diverse backgrounds;
  • Record in the field and in studio; travel may be required;
  • Communicate consistently and clearly with other members of the team at RIPR and the Humanities Council;
  • Manage programmatic budgets as they relate to the series’ production;
  • Guarantee the on-time, flawless delivery of audio to multiple platforms.

Qualifications

  • At least three years of experience producing audio;
  • Demonstrated success in the creation of superb media content under pressure;
  • Experience with research, reporting, interviewing, storytelling, audio editing and sound design;
  • Fluency in audio editing;
  • Top-notch organizational skills, attention to detail, deadlines and time-management;
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken;
  • Ability to multitask with flair;
  • An independent work ethic combined with a patience for collaborating with audiences and communities;
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field.

This program is part of the “Democracy and the Informed Citizen” Initiative, administered by the Federation of State Humanities Councils. The program seeks to deepen the public’s knowledge and appreciation of the vital connections between democracy, the humanities, journalism, and an informed citizenry.
