Description
WMRA Public Radio at James Madison University is accepting applications for a Program Director. WMRA is Harrisonburg’s local NPR affiliate, with a broadcast range spanning the Shenandoah Valley, Charlottesville, Winchester, Lexington, and Farmville, Virginia. WMRA and sister station WEMC are supported by the local community and are recognized for quality programming. WMRA is licensed to James Madison University, and all staff are employees of the university. More information about the station is at wmra.org.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Program Director is responsible for all aspects of radio broadcasting, including programming staff, program content, promotion, and on-air fundraising:
- Supervises on-air staff and performs regular air-check critiques; hires and trains new staff as needed
- Supervises and serves as backup to the Operations Specialist as necessary
- Responsible for programming ENCO automation and Allegiance Traffic systems to meet daily program needs, and makes adjustments to both when necessary
- Evaluates programming and analyzes audience data and demographics
- Develops promotional strategies for station events and programs, facilitates station events, and manages web content and online services
- Manages on-air fundraisers, implements new fundraising strategies as appropriate, and lends continuing support to WMRA’s development team (i.e., business and member support)
Qualifications
- Understanding of radio programming, formats, and sound is crucial
- Demonstrated experience with radio automation and traffic systems
- Familiarity with FCC regulations for noncommercial stations
- Ability to read and analyze Nielsen audience data
- Public relations and supervisory experience are strongly preferred
- On-air fundraising experience is a plus
