C895/KNHC provides high energy dance music to the Puget Sound region and the world and are one of eight stations that influence the Billboard Dance Chart.  Our professional staff of six full-time, five part-time, and a 13 community volunteers work in state-of-the-art facilities in northeast Seattle.  High school interns, exploring careers in electronic media, are an integral part of our mission.

The KNHC Programming Specialist plans and oversees all aspects of the on-air experience of C895/KNHC radio including music selection & scheduling, managing on-air staff, imaging, station strategy, production, energy, and sound.  The Specialist is responsible for growing the C89.5 brand and must have experience, enthusiasm, and passion for electronic/dance music, and a strong understanding of the core audience.  This person is also the primary back-up for the Morning Drive Host.

Essential Functions

85% – Programming and Music

  • Plans and implements program schedules for on-air programming
  • Implements innovative show ideas
  • Schedules music with current software and ensures quality control over daily music schedule
  • Successfully identifies, recruits, trains, mentors, and motivates on-air talent (including volunteers and students), conducts regular airchecks, and ensures the format is implemented successfully
  • Coordinates staff, volunteers and students to ensure live, local programming
  • Supervises production team
  • Uses audience-centered thinking, research and data to program and set the tone of C895/KNHC in a manner than deepens loyalty, time spent listening, and engagement of existing listeners and attracts new audiences
  • Sets audience ratings goals, creates strategies, monitors progress, and adjusts strategies as needed to achieve goals in conjunction with General Manager
  • Establishes and maintains professional relationships with recording companies, producers, managers, artists, and promoters to obtain recorded materials for the station
  • Maintains and secures the station’s physical and digital music libraries
  • Leads weekly music meetings to review music submissions and select music for rotation
  • Participates in monthly programming meetings with staff and management
  • Distributes programming over a variety of channels; FM broadcast, web streams, third-party providers, archived on-demand, and others
  • Ensures compliance with district, local, state, and federal regulations related to programming activity
  • Coordinates collection of data and filing of quarterly reports for music licensing and royalty calculations
  • Adheres to all station policies and procedures regarding indecency and obscenity
  • Operates station production equipment and monitors broadcast programming
  • Sets professional standards for all public-facing air staff
  • Maintains positive and approachable behavior when around colleagues, listeners, clients, donors, and volunteers.
  • Communicates policy updates and information to all staff

10% – Promotions & Marketing

  • Creates and manages station promotions, and coordinates on-air giveaways with the corporate sponsorship department
  • Collaborates with web and social media staff to plan and implement ongoing strategy and activities
  • Stays apprised of federal, state, and local contesting rules and regulations
  • Operates station remote broadcast equipment
  • Coordinates live promotional events and makes regular, approved appearances at station events
  • Coordinates with staff responsible for the app, social media, and website to ensure up-to-date information is available for users

5% – General

  • Maintains a working knowledge of studio and transmitter equipment and various technical systems related to the department and trains staff, volunteers and students to use, as needed
  • Stays up-to-date on FCC rules and regulations regarding the operation of a non-commercial, public radio station
  • Participates in on-air fundraising activities
  • Prepares annual departmental budget request

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • May perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Prior experience as a Program Director or Assistant Program Director
  • Demonstrated skill as on-air talent, and proficiency with technical & broadcast equipment
  • Creative mindset with ability to think outside-the-box
  • Deep knowledge and passion for electronic & dance music format
  • Experience with automation systems, audio control boards, audio editing software, and music scheduling software
  • Knowledge of FCC guidelines & requirements
  • Experience gathering and analyzing ratings data under PPM system and making programming decisions based on analysis
  • Experience executing strategic and tactical marketing, promotions, events & imaging campaigns
  • Creative writer for on-air promos and imaging
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate clearly across teams
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings & weekends for station events and during fundraising campaigns
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and social media platforms
  • Operate personal computer, standard office equipment, and applicable software
  • Ability to work in an open office environment with electronic/dance music
  • Experience using RCS products including Zetta, GSelector, & VoxPro desired
  • Successful involvement with on-air membership/fundraising drives desired

 

DESIRED EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

  • Minimum of five years of experience as Program Director or Asst Program Director
  • Minimum of three years of experience as Music Director or Asst Music Director
  • Minimum of three years of experience as on-air talent in a music format, electronic/dance preferred
  • High School diploma or GED and two years of college; AA / Technical degree or more preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work will be considered.
