The Opportunity

We are actively seeking dynamic and diverse team member to join us in the role of Project Manager, Future of Work in Wixom, MI, in a hybrid work structure.

Detroit Public Television’s (DPTV) initiative, “The Future of Work” was launched in 2022 and embraces two separate, simultaneous, and coordinated content streams.

One stream, focused on education and working closely with the Michigan Learning Channel, aims to connect young people and job seekers to career exploration and preparation resources, with the goal of guiding high school students and young adults to pursue one of the “Four E’s”: Employment, Enrollment, Enlistment, or Entrepreneurship.

The Future of Work initiative also crosses over into DPTV’s One Detroit journalism program, sparking conversations with the business community to better inform citizens about current workforce trends and developing opportunities in emerging fields.

The Project Manager will lead the development of the Future of Work program, supporting the Michigan Learning Channel and One Detroit teams by maintaining key partnerships with individuals throughout the state of Michigan who play a role in career education and workforce development, identifying key issues and community needs. The project manager will compile and curate high-quality workforce related content for distribution on broadcast and digital platforms, while at the same time supporting the creation of workforce related content including videos, social media content, blog posts, and classroom engagement materials.

The Project Manager will report to the Executive Director, Education.

Essential Functions

Relationships

  • Support building of organizational relationships with education leaders, workforce development agencies, association leadership, and other key workforce players statewide.
  • Work with partner organizations to understand key issues in the workforce space and discover and curate important stories as well as existing content for inclusion in Michigan Learning Channel and Future of Work website collections.
  • Represent DPTV in organizations and groups that support workforce development initiatives, actively building relationships that lead to successful content and working with the development teams to support relationships that lead to funding opportunities.
  • Oversee an actively growing partner database.

Content

  • In collaboration with the Michigan Learning Channel program director and the Executive Director of Education, develop a multi-platform content strategy and vision for career exploration, soft skills, and career pathways content supporting Michigan K-12 students and young adults in discovering and pursuing fulfilling post-secondary options.
  • Work with the One Detroit team to suggest and shape content for monthly town halls, weekly One Detroit and American Black Journal broadcasts, or for participation in major events related to workforce development, such as MiCareerQuest and other organizations.
  • Work directly with the Producer, Michigan Learning Channel to develop engaging instructional programs about career skills, collaborating with relevant educational experts and existing curriculum when appropriate.
  • Source and review content for use on the Michigan Learning Channel’s broadcast and digital platforms, with support of the Content Specialist.
  • Be a voice for public media in career education. Write blog posts and potentially appear in videos to draw attention to key Future of Work content and respond to current trends.
  • Ensure the quality of content across multiple platforms that aligns with the goals and strategy of the initiative.
  • Ensure compliance with established policies for content and underwriting.

Engagement

  • Work with the Executive Director, Education and the Program Director, Michigan Learning Channel, to produce materials for educator and classroom use to support career exploration and pathways for career success.
  • Develop and support programming for teachers and classrooms, including leading professional learning opportunities, conducting classroom visits, and providing support to other team members on working with educators on career programming.
  • Support engagement programs or events produced by the One Detroit team, such as focus groups or townhall conversations.
  • Work with the marketing and engagement teams to promote and amplify the impact of Future of Work programming.

Skills

  • Understanding of career preparation within the K-12 and post-secondary educational systems and how to support students, teachers, and families in career exploration, skill development, and connecting to opportunities.
  • Ability to build strong and productive relationships on behalf of the organization.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; including clear storytelling skills.
  • Excellent people skills, able to work effectively with other members of a team and other departments as well as with prospects and existing stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide constructive criticism to contributors, partners, and volunteers to achieve high quality deliverables.
  • Ability to manage projects and resources effectively.
  • Ability to contribute creative ideas.
  • Excellent organizational ability with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to complete tasks within budget and time constraints and prepare necessary reports on outcomes and impact.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, ideally in Education, Human Development, Journalism, Communications, or related field of study.
  • Experience working with youth or young adults in a career or college advising setting.
  • 5+ years of experience writing in a professional capacity.
  • Experience working directly with the business community or workforce development agencies a plus.
  • Experience in curriculum development or instructional design a plus.
  • Ability to travel statewide on occasion, including overnight stays.

Physical Demands

Individual must be able to:

  • Type, and sit behind a desk for extended periods of time.
  • Look at video, computer screens, printed documents.
  • Drive on company business.

Work Environment

Individual is exposed to a typical office setting with computer equipment and a TV studio or on-location site with some related business travel.
