Description
WHRO Public Media, located in Norfolk, VA, offers employment opportunities in a variety of disciplines including communications, education, creative services, programming, interactive services, information technology, development, radio and television engineering, accounting and many other areas.
The Sr. Newsroom Host and Producer will be the leading voice on WHRO’s new weekday daytime show, which is an extension of WHRO’s newsroom. The Sr. Newsroom Host and Producer will plan and lead shows about what makes Hampton Roads unique, and will reintroduce listeners to Hampton Roads by humanizing the news by offering a strong and compelling local narrative.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Host WHRO’s new weekday daytime show which includes live and pre-recorded elements
- Conceptualize, research, and assist in producing daytime program
- Establish priorities, vision, and objectives of the show in conjunction with the newsroom strategic plan and News Director
- Participate in daily news meeting, and find connection between WHRO reporting and the daily show
- Maintain appropriate and professional social media accounts to engage with the audience of the daytime show, soliciting questions, suggestions and sources
- Create audio spots for newscasts from the daily show with the assistance of a producer
- Develop show segments that inform, introduce, and present the region in new and compelling ways
- Lead thoughtful, sensitive discussions about breaking news events during daytime show
- Participate in periodic aircheck reviews with the program and news director to enhance the sound and performance of the show
- Localize national subjects to appeal to Hampton Roads’ diverse population
- Develop engaging, energetic and personable on-air personality
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Five to ten year’s professional radio hosting experience
- Proven knowledge of professional online journalism practices, including professional journalism writing
- Strong social media presence
- Proven ability to distill complex information into clear and concise copy for diverse listeners
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or 4 years’ related professional experience
Experience:
- Familiarity with digital audio editing software, especially Adobe Audition
COVID-19
