Description
Marfa Public Radio aims to build more leadership opportunities within the organization and the public media system. The station is hiring a Station Manager to work with the Executive Director. Marfa Public Radio is at an exciting time of growth. In 2021 the station secured a permanent home by purchasing the building. The focus of 2022 will be reimagining how Marfa Public Radio’s vision and mission are rendered concrete in the building that houses it. The Station Manager is an essential role to ensure the effective day-to-day operation of the station.
Salary: $65,000-$85,000 Annual
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees the effective and efficient execution of content and programming, as well as operational, administrative, and accounting functions to advance the mission, vision, values, strategies, and goals of the organization.
- Provide a healthy, safe, and creative working environment for all staff and contractors. Schedule and prioritize work to ensure the highest quality and best use of resources.
- Day-to-day management of the facilities and directly oversees the following functional areas: Programming, Accounting, Engineering, Operations and IT, and Human Resources.
- Administers all policies, rules, regulations and reporting requirements of Marfa Public Radio, the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, the Federal Communications Commission and government entities.
- Communicates effectively and maintains a strong and supportive working relationship with the ED and the Board of Directors.
- Facilitates membership drives with Membership Coordinator and staff.
- Works closely with the Community Advisory Board to advance public service and ensure CPB compliance.
- Provides outreach to the regional audience through strategic marketing, events, and in-person and online/digital engagement.
- Assist development staff with fundraising strategies including identification, cultivation and solicitation of prospective and existing individual, institutional and business prospects, donors and underwriters.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Passion for Marfa Public Radio and public broadcasting and its case for support.
- Strong independent managerial skills; able to work effectively with staff members, supporters and the public.
- Strong communications skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships in a non-partisan way.
- Ability to be persistent, persuasive, and be a problem-solver.
- Project management experience.
- Motivated, energetic, creative and organized self-starter and team player.
- Ability to think strategically to develop, plan, coordinate, report and execute projects, while taking a hands-on approach.
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities and goals, communicate with precision and clarity, motivate and enlist others to meet goals while maintaining flexibility in a fast paced environment.
- Results oriented and goal focused.
- Ability to participate in events, including occasional evenings and weekends, and trips involving travel.
About You:
- 3-5 years of station management experience preferred
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum four years of supervisory and applicable experience, including community-relationship building and managing a variety of significant projects independently.
- Experience in creating and managing events and partnerships.

The Market and Our Public Service:
Marfa Public Radio broadcasts from the border to the Permian Basin. The station reaches across Far West Texas with five frequencies that air a mix of local and national news, stories, and music. Listeners from across Texas, the country, and the world tune in online.
Marfa is a small town with a big personality. There are many artists as well as art institutions. Marfa Public Radio punch above its weight and believes in the OG mission of public radio to solve local problems and lift the human spirit. We do that through experimentation and creativity in the service of relevance. Marfa Public Radio is a truly essential service. In many areas of the region, there are no other radio signals. Because our service is critical nearly half of the station’s employees are journalists. While national personalities pass through town, the heart and soul of the station is serving the residents and communities throughout the Big Bend. The station is situated in the beautiful Chihuahuan desert, sixty miles from the border of Mexico and Big Bend National Park. The Big Bend is ranch country, and many residents are bilingual. Favorite station programs include Dos Horas Con Primo, Calo, Nature Notes, and Texas Music Hour of Power.
