Description
*************Updated Posting*************
Located in beautiful, coastal Wilmington, North Carolina, WHQR is looking for a leader to build on our success.
Founded in 1984, WHQR is a community licensed public radio station with both a news/information channel and a classical music channel. Headquartered in historic downtown Wilmington, we are a trusted source of news and entertainment providing diverse programming for the growing and thriving tri-county region in the state’s southeastern corner, with additional coverage in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
With a just-completed, successful capital campaign, and positive trends in both membership and underwriting, WHQR is poised for growth. We are seeking a leader with the vision, energy, and experience to build on our commitment to the information and entertainment needs of our listeners, while broadening our engagement with the wider community.
The Station Manager (SM) will need industry experience and demonstrated skills in the following areas:
PEOPLE MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS:
We are seeking a strong and effective communicator with proven interpersonal and leadership experience. The SM must be capable of incorporating diverse opinions into decision making, fostering a collaborative environment, and managing a team with a style that is warm, inclusive and direct. The SM must also be an experienced broadcaster, with the technical understanding to make decisions regarding broadcast operations, and the ability to adapt to new systems and technologies. Additionally, the SM is responsible for compliance with all FCC regulations, and the continued maintenance and improvement of the station’s physical plant and facilities.
FUNDRAISING AND FINANCE:
The SM has the chief fundraising responsibility for the station, while guiding the development staff in their work. Fundraising includes membership development, donor development and cultivation, special events, and underwriting. The SM also supports staff in grant writing and solicitation, and applications to CPB and other possible government funding sources. At the same time, the SM is responsible for creating and managing station budgets, the maintenance of records, and financial reporting to the board of directors. The SM will also negotiate and administer agreements and contracts with station suppliers and vendors.
BROADCASTING AND JOURNALISM:
We are seeking a leader who understands and supports the station’s commitment to responsible journalism and enterprise reporting—the kind of reporting that enhances civil discourse, strengthens our sense of community, and reflects a local vision. The SM must also understand the emerging trends in radio and public broadcasting, and be comfortable in a world of digital platforms, social media outlets and podcasts.
OUTREACH:
The WHQR station manager is our public face to the community, and is responsible for assuring we’re responsive to community needs and concerns. The SM will guide station outreach efforts to members, listeners, and the broader community. The SM also interacts with local businesses, organizations, schools and other institutions to articulate our mission and build strong collaborative relationships. The SM will report to our elected board of directors, and be responsible for implementing the policies and strategic plan developed and approved by the Board.
HOW TO APPLY:
For consideration, please submit a resume and a letter of introduction that outlines why you would be the ideal person to lead WHQR into the future. Please also provide contact information for a minimum of three professional references.
