POSITION SUMMARY
Do you regularly refer friends with existential questions to This American Life episodes or begin conversations with “I heard this story on NPR…”? Are you the first to volunteer when something just needs to get done? Do you want an award-winning team to show you the ropes of producing a live radio show?
If that sounds like you – and you’re a student with designs on a media career – you might just be the right intern for KERA’s Think show.
As a paid intern, you will be helping with the production of our daily talk show, Think, where host Krys Boyd picks the brains of documentarians, authors, politicians and influencers. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how the live show is produced. You’ll play a vital role in helping Krys prepare for her interviews. And you’ll actively participate in our pitch sessions – each semester, show ideas pitched by Think interns make it to the air.
This is an FLSA classified non-exempt position and will report to the Executive Producer, Think.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Interns play a vital role in making Think happen every day and responsibilities may change on a weekly or daily basis, depending on the needs of the department.
· Compiling guest/topic research
· Writing daily rundowns
· Producing audio for shows
· Pitching show and story ideas
· Greeting and escorting in-studio guests
· Writing social media teasers
· Drafting web posts
· Uphold and advance KERA’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
· Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
· Perform additional duties as assigned
WHAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL:
Qualified applicants must be current students (in an accredited degree program) or have graduated no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship.
You should have knowledge of public radio and the Think show, strong writing and editing skills with a solid understanding of AP style. Audio editing experience, previous experience working for a daily new organization and knowledge of social media practices are not required but are preferred.
SALARY:
$16 per hour paid on a bi-weekly pay period. Interns can expect to work 15-20 hours per week.
LOCATION AND SCHEDULE:
The internship is based in Dallas/Fort Worth, but interns can work a hybrid schedule. Interns should have some availability between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Hours are flexible, and we will work with you to accommodate class schedules.
The internship will begin around August 28, 2023-December 8, 2023. There may be opportunities to extend the internship into the Spring 2024 term.
HOW TO APPLY:
Complete the application on KERA’s employment page and attach a resume and cover letter. Your cover letter should include a pitch for a Think show – including the topic we’ll discuss and who we should talk with – as well as links to samples of your written news stories, audio stories photography or video work. Please also share how you found out about this position.
