Description

This position writes and edits spot and feature news stories for on air and digital delivery. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to be creative, innovative, and organized, as well as the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

Primary Duties

  1. Researches, writes, voices, produces, and edits daily spot and/or feature news stories for on air and digital platforms.
  2. Acts as backup anchor of local newscasts during Morning Edition, Mid-Day West Michigan, and All Things Considered.
  3. Updates station website with local news stories.
  4. Hosts or co-hosts station programs or events as needed.
  5. Represents WGVU Public Media at station-sponsored events.
  6. Assists in on air fundraising efforts.
  7. Excels in a collaborative multiplatform culture and work environment.
  8. Helps carry out the station’s strategic plan.
  9. Performs other duties as required/assigned by manager.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • A minimum of two years news radio reporting experience.
  • Experience in reporting situations, including impromptu and scripted interview settings.
  • Experience in field news gathering or remote recording situations.
  • Knowledge of digital audio editing and studio production including the ability to operate the digital radio board, playback/automation system, and general broadcast equipment and software.
  • Candidates must be committed to the mission of WGVU, PBS, NPR, and GVSU.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and under deadline.
  • Work effectively with co-workers, and the public.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Proficiency with audio editing production programs.
  • Work within a collaborative multiplatform culture and environment.
  • Regional travel for news reporting.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to manage and maintain assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work self-sufficiently with little direction when required.
  • Professional and punctual.

Working Conditions

Will include both normal office environment as well as in production areas and on location.  Travel may be required. At times, may be required to appear on WGVU Public Media for fundraising and promotional announcements or events. WGVU is a smoke, nicotine, and drug-free work environment. WGVU staff are considered Essential Personnel and are required to work when classes are cancelled or GVSU is closed. You must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license. Must have the ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including some nights, weekends and holidays.

Salary: $50,000 – $52,000
