WUNC Capitol Bureau Chief
North Carolina Public Radio WUNC, Chapel Hill
North Carolina Public Radio WUNC is hiring a Capitol Bureau Chief.
Reporting: The Capitol Bureau Chief reports to WUNC’s Features Editor.
The Position:
WUNC’s Capitol Bureau Chief is one of the most important and high-profile reporting positions in the state of North Carolina. The CBC covers all aspects of politics and government, with an eye toward enterprise, compelling, meaningful coverage of how politics and government in North Carolina impacts residents. The CBC has significant input into how that mandate is met. Previous individuals in this position have hosted the very popular and long-running WUNC Politics Podcast; interviewed governors, presidential candidates, U.S. Senators, and other leaders; published sound-and-data-rich stories on campaign spending, gerrymandering, and voter integrity; hosted conversations at WUNC-sponsored events; and embarked on a wide variety of other journalistic efforts. It is based in Raleigh, NC.
Duties Include:
WUNC’s Capitol Bureau Chief contributes at all levels to the station’s political coverage in serving our large and influential audience. Stories and reports produced by the CBC also reach every corner of North Carolina via the North Carolina Public Radio Association content sharing partnership. The CBC is an active contributor to NPR and the NPR State Government meetings, earning additional freelance income and a nationwide audience for stories that look at how national politics is playing out in our state. Previous CBCs have appeared regularly on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Here and Now, the BBC, CNN, and numerous other national and international outlets.
As news events do not conform to a regular 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule, there are times when the Capitol Bureau Chief is called on for work during weekends and after hours. The CBC will also be expected to participate in on-air fundraisers and station events.
The Candidate:
This is an important position at WUNC and is treated as such. WUNC is one of the more well-resourced public radio stations in the country. The work culture is flexible and invigorating, with an eye toward rewarding strong performance and creating stability and sustainable professional growth within the newsroom. Collegiality, a sense of humor, and a strong appreciation for the mission and future of public media are other valued traits.
WUNC seeks someone with extensive experience reporting on politics and government at the state level, preferably with an established reputation and/or a vision for delivering creative and important stories and content across all of WUNC’s platforms. The CBC will consult with WUNC’s editors to advise coverage on other beats that are touched by politics, such as education, environment, healthcare, etc.
