North Carolina Public Radio WUNC is hiring Youth Reporters, Non-Student (5).
WUNC Radio provides quality news, information and entertainment programming to a broad listening audience that includes North Carolina, the United States and the world. WUNC serves North Carolinians from Greensboro to the Outer Banks through a network of seven stations, with a weekly cume of 300,000 listeners.
These positions are located in Chapel Hill & Durham, NC.
WUNC Youth Reporting is opening up our highly competitive and award-winning Youth Reporting Institute (YRI) – a radio journalism training program to all high school and college students, ages 16-25 and non-student individuals. This posting is specifically for individuals who are not currently students. Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and all individuals of color (BI-POC) are encouraged to apply (no prior journalism background is required). Participants will learn and sharpen skills in radio journalism, interact with a diverse group of reporters in various stages of their career, build relationships with youth across the state of North Carolina, and connect to a platform that will amplify their work and voice. Five (5) selected participants will have the chance to be featured on the WUNC youth podcast and/or produce a radio story for broadcast.
Position Description — As a participant, you will gain access to daily training sessions along with tutorial videos that will take you through the steps of the reporting process, from pitching to interviewing to script-writing and editing. Each week, participants will learn a new skill and participate in a challenge to sharpen that skill. Along with receiving one-on-one training from WUNC’s Director of New Talent and Community partnerships, you will also have the chance to interact with YRI program alums, journalism instructors, and professional reporters on our weekly Instagram live.
Salary & Work Schedule — The program will begin Monday, June 6th, and run until Friday, August 5th. Participants should designate 10-15 hours a week to work towards a production deadline and are expected to join every training session. You will work in a hybrid format with daily meetings occurring Monday-Friday from 1pm to 5pm. There will be multiple opportunities for in-person training at our Durham studio location; this is where we will skill-build and get hands-on with our stories. Participants will be paid $16/hour.
Minimum Education & Experience Required: High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. No prior journalism background is required.
Special Applicant Instructions: There are limited spots, so we would like to get to know as much as we can about each candidate. Candidates should be prepared to answer questions about equity and diversity in their personal lives, along with a current resume/CV, cover letter, three (3) story pitches, and a link to any relevant work and/or social media presence.

- Start the Research: Include at least three (3) people you would interview, and what they would contribute to your radio Be sure to provide contact information (email, office phone, twitter handle, etc.)
- Think Broader: Brainstorm how this story may look on social media: What sound and photo opportunities will work well with this
