Inside a Public Radio Station
It’s important to understand who does what internally at your station. When you know how to navigate your way on the inside, you can help your clients outside the station better. While stations vary by size and structure, there are several jobs that are universal.
The general manager (GM) oversees all departments. He or she also interacts with the license holder; local public media stations typically hold community, university, or statewide broadcast licenses, and some are joint licensees (including both TV and radio in their local service). Among other responsibilities, the GM sets the budget and sees that the station sticks to it, and participates in fundraising by cultivating major donors and working closely with your station’s board of directors.…
