Description
Detroit Public Television (DPTV) is the non-commercial, viewer-supported PBS-member station watched by more than 1.5 million people in Detroit and Southeast Michigan and another 1.2 million people throughout Canada. Our vision is for a community in which people trust public media to help them discover new ideas, make informed decisions, and enjoy enriched lives.
DPTV offers 10 hours of PBS Kids programs each weekday, along with other favorite local and national programming and news shows, such as PBS Newshour. The station is notably active in the community producing local programs that showcase arts, culture, and news analysis using the power of media to provide knowledge and understanding.
DPTV, a 501(c) 3 organization licensed to the Detroit Educational Television Foundation and governed by a volunteer board of trustees from the local business, civic, and cultural communities also manages WRCJ 90.9 FM, Detroit’s classical and jazz radio station, in collaboration with the license-holder, the Detroit Public Schools. The radio station is located in the Detroit School of Arts.
In addition to the main channel 56.1, the station also operates Detroit PBS Kids Channel, 56.2; WORLD 56.3 and CREATE 56.4.
We are actively pursuing dynamic and diverse team members to join us in the role of Communications Specialist in Wixom, MI.
What You’ll Do:
The Communications Specialist will provide reporting, writing and editing support to all aspects of the Communications and Engagement Department, including digital and social media posts, print products, emails and media releases, as needed to fulfill the strategic objectives of DPTV. This individual will seek to refine, enhance and promote DPTV content, communications and engagement.
Essential Functions:
- Understand the communications and engagement strategic objectives of DPTV and apply creative and effective approaches to achieve demonstrable results
- Help establish and enhance the DPTV brand, burnish its image in the community, and promote and amplify its content
- Research, report and produce documents across a wide variety of communications platforms – print, electronic, digital and social media
- Conceive, create and manage social media communications for DPTV
- Produce analytic reports on the volume, reach and engagement of digital and social media communications
- Collaborate with all members of the Digital, Communications and Engagement team, as well as departments throughout DPTV
- Meet regularly with directors of digital, communications and engagement and establish effective relationships with other DPTV colleagues
- Produce promotional, communications and marketing materials for print, digital and social medial platforms
- Create, edit and refine content that is accurate, fair, meaningful and engaging
- Encourage viewer engagement through social media and other channels
- Assist in fundraising through communications
- Other duties as assigned
Skills:
- Excellent reporting, writing and communications skills
- Communications, journalism or related knowledge and experience
- Knowledge and understanding of popular social medical platforms including (but not limited to) Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram and Tumblr
- Ability to learn digital and social media analytics and other similar tools
- Experience with relevant aspects of Web-based and print communications
- Familiarity with and interest in topics of importance to the Detroit Public Television community, including arts and culture, children and education, leadership and public policy, health and wellness, energy and environment and the general well-being of the people of Detroit and Southeast Michigan
- Knowledge of and adherence to tenets of accuracy, fairness and ethical standards of communications
- Creative, innovative and thoughtful approaches to assignments
- Ability to work well across the many departments of the Detroit Public Television and with diverse community in the external environment
- Ability to adapt to a changing media landscape and to apply emerging technologies as necessary
- Ability to set and meet deadlines and to work irregular and extended hours when required
- An appreciation for the mission of public media
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, English or related subject matter field required
- 2-plus years of communications, journalism, public relation, marketing or related experience
