Kansas News Service Editor – KCUR Public Radio
KCUR 89.3 FM
Kansas City
,
MO
Application Deadline: Sunday, Jan 24, 2021
Description
KCUR 89.3 is seeking a news editor to join the Kansas News Service, a reporting collaboration of public media stations throughout Kansas. This is a chance to work with reporters on a range of statewide stories in an organization that’s becoming increasingly important in the Kansas news universe.
We seek an editor who is passionate about diving deep into issues and working collaboratively with talented reporters producing top-notch journalism. Our reportage aims to resonate with ordinary Kansans and influence public debate on health, government, politics, the Legislature, education, energy and the environment.
The editor is responsible for driving ambitious daily coverage across all of our platforms – radio, digital, social media and possibly through podcasts – and should be comfortable working quickly on the news of the day. In concert with the managing editor, you’ll assign daily stories on a range of topics and, when time allows, pursue your own reporting or lead the editing on special projects.
The ability to work cooperatively with the managing editor, reporters and news directors across the collaborative defines the position. You’ll find the reporters eager to learn and to share their expertise on the issues that matter in Kansas. While the Kansas News Service aims to be nimble in producing breaking news, the emphasis is on enterprising stories that would otherwise go uncovered – or that other news organizations would tackle with less analysis. The editor should possess a keen understanding of what makes public media journalism special, but also have ambitions to help drive public media forward.
Although KCUR is located in Kansas City, we’re open to the Editor working from some other location in Kansas. See www.kcur.org/jobs for the complete position description and information about KCUR.
Preferred qualifications include: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in journalism, communications, education or a related field. And three years of management experience or daily reporting experience in a public media or news organization.
Salary starts at $47,476 – $58,000, commensurate with experience.
Application deadline is January 24,2021. KCUR 89.3 is the NPR affiliate in Kansas City and is an editorially independent community service of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Please apply online at UMKC’s website: https://info.umkc.edu/hr/careers/ Select “Staff Positions,” then “View Jobs,,” then “View All Jobs.”
