Position Summary: The Midday Show Producer supports the work of the Midday Show Host and coordinates production of the Midday Show, managing technical and administrative aspects, and providing creative content for the show and other projects as assigned. This position maintains a thorough understanding of KEXP’s mission and plays a key role in bringing new music and innovative programming to the KEXP audience.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
- Organizes, prepares, and manages the details and content of the daily live broadcast of the Midday Show, including compiling, organizing, researching, and maintaining music and content for use on the Midday Show.
- Edits audio for airplay, edits audio interviews and produces show features, manages research of music and artists for show features, and assists with interview preparation for sessions with artists and other Midday Show guests.
- Proposes, prepares, executes, and produces Midday Show themes and other creative content ideas.
- Provides research, production, and preparation for interviews, speeches, appearances, etc.
- Manages Midday Show calendar; tracks in studio sessions, theme days, features, events, etc and makes sure the Midday Show host is informed and prepared for all items on the calendar.
- Contributes to music discovery for the Midday Show, with a focus on quality of music and proactively discovering new and diverse artists.
- Manages music submissions and previews for potential airplay and manages Midday Show Host’s music library.
- Manages inquiries and requests from artists, record labels, and other members of the music community, including the scheduling of show guests and Midday Show giveaways.
- Manages, researches, and strategizes marketing the content of the Midday Show through various outlets, including social media outreach in real time during the Midday Show and providing content for media outlets, in coordination with KEXP’s media and social media strategies and best practices.
- Researches, writes, edits, and maintains written content for the KEXP website and other outlets on behalf of the Midday Show Host & Creative Director, Live Performances; ensures contributed content and posts are in accordance with the established voice of KEXP.
- Attends and contributes to the Content Team meeting and other Programming meetings as needed; represents the Midday Show Host & Creative Director, Live Performances at meetings, takes notes, and keeps the Midday Show Host & Creative Director, Live Performances informed of what transpires at meetings they are unable to attend.
- Functions as board operator during Midday Show in studio sessions and other times, as needed.
- Functions as fill-in DJ Assistant for The Midday Show, as needed.
- Responds to specific listener emails and texts on behalf of the Midday Show Host as directed.
- Provides support during donor drives and special fundraising campaigns, including the execution of special programming content during drives; is the designated point of contact for the Midday Show Host during all fundraising campaigns, coordinating drive related work such as giveaways, themes, events, and other requests for the Midday Show.
- Directs and supervises the work of Midday Show DJ Assistants and interns.
- Represents Midday Show Host & Creative Director, Live Performances when greeting artists and artist representatives for in-studio sessions and preps artists on session format as needed.
- Represents the station at public-facing events as needed.
Organizational & Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Maintains thorough understanding of KEXP organizational policies, including employee handbook, procedures, expense reporting, and payroll submission; follows policies and leads by example.
- Actively participates in our culture of philanthropy, which honors the important role our donors, volunteers, business and community partners play in the life of KEXP. Collaborates across teams and departments to steward donors on behalf of KEXP and actively seeks opportunities to integrate philanthropy into their role within KEXP operations, programs, and projects.
Supervision Received: Position reports to Midday Show Host & Creative Director, Live Performances.
Supervision Exercised: Provides direct supervision to Midday Show interns and volunteers.
Requirements
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree and three or more years of related professional experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above.
Position Qualifications:
- Deep knowledge of, appreciation for, and understanding of KEXP programming and mission. High degree of familiarity with KEXP format and playlists.
- Strong research, writing and editing skills and experience, preferably related to contemporary music. Ability to perform in-depth internet research.
- Production experience in a studio environment. Audio production skills required. Familiarity with digital editing (Audition preferred), Mac and PC proficient. Familiarity with DJ software (Traktor, DJPro, etc) and iTunes a plus.
- Experience producing radio shows and/or podcasts, ideally including on-air broadcast experience.
- Proven ability to manage social media accounts and create web content.
- Must regularly work Midday Show hours and occasionally be available to work evenings or weekends, as needed, and additional hours during peak times, or as required.
- Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments.
- Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color, in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process.
- An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on under-invited communities, either through lived experience and/or training and education.
- Commitment to advancing justice and equity in the arts with a passion for community building.
- Outstanding attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
- Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, planning and decision-making skills.
- Strong relationship management skills. Excellent interpersonal, presentation, relationship-building, and communication skills – both written and verbal – which transcend diverse audiences.
- Strong self-motivation and independence in carrying out responsibilities, organizing and prioritizing multiple tasks, and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to learn technical programs and systems quickly.
- Ability to work professionally in a fast-paced environment and under stress (live radio). Demonstrated ability to maintain a professional demeanor, especially while working in a fast-paced environment of constant demands and frequent interruptions.
- Ability to take initiative and use independent judgment within established policy and procedural guidelines.

Physical Requirements: Long periods of being in a stationary position; operating a computer and other office equipment; frequently moving to/from various work areas; frequently communicating by phone and email; frequently remaining in a stationary position during meetings, discerning meeting content, expressing oneself, and exchanging accurate information; frequently moving to/from off-site meeting and/or event locations; occasionally moves supplies and/or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
Working Conditions: Primary location in typical business office environment, with frequent meetings, both in person and online, and event attendance at a variety of off-site locations. This position is eligible for up to 30% remote work depending on Midday Show in-studio schedule after a fully onsite training period.
Compensation & Benefits: This full-time (30 hours/week), non-exempt position includes an hourly wage of $31.00 – $34.00, depending on experience. This position is eligible for a generous benefits package which includes medical/dental/vision coverage (premiums 90-100% employer paid), subsidized transit pass, contributions to a retirement program, and much more.
