JOB TITLE: Northland Morning Show Host
REPORTS TO: Station Manager
FLSA STATUS: Full-time, Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

Serving an area encompassing over 369,000 potential listeners in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Canada, WDSE-FM (The North, 103.3FM) enriches the community through programming and services that educate, inspire, and entertain. We foster an engaged citizenship through an appreciation of arts and culture, the joy of learning, and the power of diverse perspectives. The North 103.3FM, (formerly KUMD-FM), was recently purchased by WDSE-WRPT, which has created one of the few dual-license public media groups in the country, and the only one in Minnesota. As such, The North 103.3FM, a heritage AAA radio station, greatly adds to our current public media offerings in the Duluth-Superior DMA. With the station’s continued growth, WDSE-FM seeks an experienced on-air talent to host a revamped, community-engaged morning show: Northland Mornings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Host a live, daily program from 5:30am until 9am, Monday through Friday.
• Provide a demonstrated creativity, imagination, and ability to establish a strong relationship with the audience.
• Plan and coordinate the daily show topics and book guests as needed. This music-centered program should focus on timely, newsworthy, or trending subject matter. The host should feel comfortable interviewing the local gardening expert during one segment, then hosting the latest indie music sensation in the next.
• Have thorough knowledge of the AAA and/or Alternative format and the artists closely associated with it. Expertise in particular sub-genres (i.e., hip-hop, americana, etc.) that may lend itself to content creation is helpful.
• Be comfortable interacting with the general public, and possess the ability to serve as the “primary face” of the radio station.
• Regularly interact professionally with various local officials as well as community service and nonprofit providers. An interest in serving disadvantaged and minority populations is highly encouraged.
• Bring an enthusiasm to work with our television sister-station in tandem with the radio program. Ability to be comfortable, natural, and relatable on camera; or have the desire to learn and take direction.
• Demonstrate aptitude and attitude to work in a fast and accurate manner under pressure.
• Work in compliance with Company policies and procedures as well as FCC guidelines.
• Some familiarity with Public Radio broadcasting best practices.
• A commitment to mission-driven non-profit organizations; enthusiastic about the mission, programs, and services of WDSE-FM.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Ability to run radio automation systems such as Zeta, WideOrbit and PlayoutONE.
• Skilled with Adobe Products, especially Audition. Additional skills with any of the other Adobe Creative Cloud products is also a plus.
• Possess strong social media skills and the ability to write entertaining, informative online content including daily website articles and scripts for video productions.
• Skilled in preparing for interviews and composing background research, while also adept at interviewing various personalities from several sectors and backgrounds.
• Ability to work with with WordPress or similar CMS.
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across multiple departments.
• Well-organized, with exceptional attention to detail and follow through.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

• 3-5 years of experience working on-air at a public or commercial broadcasting radio station.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, verbal communication, nonverbal
communication, and use of computer screens. Occasional lifting and carrying of broadcast related equipment at on-location broadcasts.
