ABOUT THE JOB

The news editor leads reporting staff and serves as day-to-day manager of our team and its work. The news editor collaborates with the News Director, Director of Digital Content and Assistant News Editor to deliver on our daily content plan. The news editor assigns, shapes and edits stories for our digital and audio platforms that cover the people, places and issues in the Lehigh Valley. The news editor is a coach and mentor who can energize reporters with varying levels of experience. The news editor will work closely with other newsroom leaders to streamline workflow, develop newsgathering and audience strategies, and foster an ambitious, inclusive work culture.

We’re a growing public media company with a television station and an NPR radio station that is rebuilding a newsroom and new digital platform. Our Reporters have local news beats, not remote positions. As we grow and restructure, upping our digital game and expanding our digital audience top the list of priorities. We’re in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania – a news-rich community whose traditional media have been battered and shrunken by layoffs and corporate ownership. Our mission: Reinvigorate our community with journalism that informs and enlightens – and beat back the shadows of a looming news desert.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

-You’ll drive our success through your leadership of a reporting team with geographic and topical beats in the Lehigh Valley.

-You’ll assign stories and work with other editors to develop and implement a consistent, reliable multi-platform content plan.

-You’ll manage the daily and weekly news workflow while planning ahead and shepherding long-term projects.

-You’ll use sharp news judgment in directing reporters and shaping story ideas, quickly turning breaking news when needed.

-You’ll edit content to ensure accuracy and quality.

-You’ll collaborate across departments, bring ideas, help to build audience and engagement, and work toward improving our overall operation.

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATES ARE:

Versatile and steady under pressure. Able to bloom in a startup environment and not get frustrated or overwhelmed by the pace of growth. Able to shift platforms and have experience in multimedia, capturing high-quality audio, video and still images that complement their work. Versed in social media best practices and able to optimize content through social media. Spanish-speakers are a plus.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

-Bachelor’s degree preferably in Journalism, English, or Communications and/or equivalent work experience.

-A record as an assignment editor who has led reporters in a print or radio newsroom and demonstrated editorial decision-making. Multi-platform editing is a big plus. Management and Leadership experience with multiple direct reports.

  • Pay within a range of $60,000 to $63,000 annually to start with annual merit increase eligibility.
