About WDSE

The Duluth-Superior Area Educational Television Corporation is the community licensee of full-power CPB qualified PBS member stations WDSE (Duluth) and WRPT (Hibbing). Serving the Arrowhead and Iron Range of Northeastern Minnesota, Northwestern Wisconsin, and the western tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the organization has provided an unduplicated public television service in the Duluth-Superior DMA since 1964. A legacy of local production, from long running viewer call-in programs to award-winning historical documentaries, has earned the stations a strong base of member support.

Mindful of its educational roots, many local productions are offered for classroom use and supplemented with online teacher guides. Through collaboration with public television stations across Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin, the stations offer a truly regional programming service. Respectful of the region’s demographic and cultural diversity, the organization produces Native Report, a magazine style program carried on over 20 stations across the country, and carries programs produced in Hmong, Vietnamese and other languages.

About Duluth and our region

Duluth is Minnesota’s fourth largest city with a population of approximately 86,000 (within a 30-mile radius, the population is approximately 180,000). Located halfway between Minneapolis/St. Paul and the Canadian border, the city perches on the westernmost point of the Great Lakes on the north shore of beautiful Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world. Duluth and Superior, Wisconsin (collectively called the Twin Ports) share the Duluth-Superior Harbor (the world’s largest inland port). Duluth is home to four colleges and universities, serves as a regional medical center for surrounding cities and states, and is a tourist destination for over 3.5 million people annually.

Outdoor opportunities abound, with over 129 municipal parks, two 27-hole golf courses, miles of trails (hiking/running, biking, skiing), dozens of rivers and creeks within the city, dog parks, secluded waterfalls throughout town, rock-climbing opportunities throughout the city, incredible fishing, an international sculpture garden, a rose garden with more than 40,000 roses, and Hawk Ridge, which serves as a ‘funnel’ for tens of thousands of migratory hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey.

Duluth features America’s only all-freshwater aquarium, the Great Lakes Aquarium, the Aerial Lift Bridge, which spans the short canal into Duluth’s harbor, “Park Point,” the world’s longest freshwater sandbar, spanning six miles, and is a launching point for Minnesota’s incredibly beautiful North Shore. Local brewing is huge, there are over fifty restaurants in the downtown area alone, and the Canal Park area along the waterfront boasts fabulous shops, dining, and outdoor experiences. The arts scene includes the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Ballet, the Lyric Opera of the North, the Duluth Playhouse, the Duluth Art Institute, the University of Minnesota-Duluth’s Tweed Museum, and the Karpeles Museum.

Duluth is a beautiful, affordable, family-friendly place to live with great schools, endless outdoor opportunities, wonderful arts opportunities, and a healthy diversity of dining and cultural experiences.
