The Opportunity
We’re recruiting for a Legal Fellow! The Roger Cooke Legal Fellowship is an 18-month donor-funded position that will be part of a small in-house team that manages OPB’s legal work. We intend to leverage the short-term nature of this position to provide broad-based in-house training. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in a mission driven organization for an early career or returning lawyer who has a demonstrated interest in media law. If this sounds like you, we would love to see you apply!
Position Details
The Roger Cooke Legal Fellowship is a donor-funded position in the small (but mighty) in-house team that manages OPB’s legal work. The purpose of the Fellowship is to provide in-house experience to an early career or returning lawyer who has a demonstrated interest in media law.
OPB’s Legal department works with leadership and all departments of the organization to solve problems, assess and mitigate risks, facilitate transactions, clear rights, manage litigation and administrative appeals, assist with regulatory compliance, and develop sound policies and procedures. This is a great opportunity to join a vibrant, mission-driven organization.
This fellowship is intentionally limited to an 18-month term. As part of OPB’s public service mission, we intend to leverage the short-term nature of this position to provide broad-based in-house training, while also expanding the number of lawyers in Oregon with significant media law experience.
This position, along with the rest of OPB’s Legal team, keeps racial equity and inclusion central to our work. An equity and inclusion filter serves as the framework through which we can drive institutional and cultural change. We are learners in this space and the Legal team is a key leader in OPB’s equity journey.
Responsibilities
50% – Draft and review agreements & legal filings and participate in negotiations, all with an emphasis on media law, administrative policies & nonprofit governance.
25% – Counsel in-house clients (content producers, newsroom, programming & audience engagement, development, administration) with respect to a wide variety of general matters, and incorporating a racial equity filter, often on very short timelines.
20% – Conduct legal research and participate in strategy sessions with in-house attorneys and outside counsel.
5% – Perform any other functions delegated by the VP & General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel.
Working Conditions
The Legal Fellow works approximately 40 hours/week, typically during OPB’s business hours (8am-5pm, Monday through Friday). This position spends the majority of time in an office environment using a computer and telephone. The Legal Fellow may be required to work outside general office hours to accomplish work needs. Occasional travel may be necessary. During COVID, all work is performed remotely using equipment provided by OPB.
