Description

Directs, coordinates, supervises and manages staff engaged in programming activities in the University’s public radio station. This position reports to the University’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement.

 

  • Manage and direct all staff for maximum efficiency of station
  • Research, plan, develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive programming format for WVAS-FM
  • Develop and oversee a full-scale educational and public affairs programming schedule
  • Develop regional and national programming initiatives, based on knowledge of audience tastes and trends
  • Develop and direct community engagement initiatives
  • Prepare and manage all operational and grant budgets for the radio station
  • Consider strategies with marketing personnel to promote programs to potential audience members
  • Monitor industry trends, technology and the station’s competitive environment
  • Organize and direct a full-scale news operation to distribute news of interest to Alabama State University and the public
  • Act as a liaison between WVAS-FM and the University faculty
  • Develop and execute a robust plan for securing donors and underwriters: individuals, foundations and corporate
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of donors and underwriters
  • Coordinate and oversee two major fundraising activities annually
  • Manage the execution of community relations activities with various organizations within and external to the University
  • Serve as primary liaison to the public, Federal Communications Commission, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and other professional and community organizations
  • Oversee operations to ensure compliance with government and licensee regulations
  • Manage audits and prepare reports as required by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, ensuring that audits are completed and reports submitted according to CPB guidelines and within specified deadlines
  • Confer with licensee senior management to discuss station policy and administrative procedures
  • Recruit personnel and make hiring recommendations to management
  • Perform all other job-related duties as directed by the supervisor

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to plan, assign, direct, and manage the work of subordinate employees in the radio station
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to express ideas effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to work with and manage a variety of skilled/unskilled, professional and administrative personnel
  • Knowledge of office administration, budgeting, repair and maintenance on radio equipment

 

Training and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Radio/Television Broadcasting, or a related field, required

Five (5) years working in radio or television in an appropriate area, required (relevant experience and ability may be substituted)

Experience in public radio, particularly with strong management background, preferred
