The stations are operated by Community Communications, Inc., based in Orlando. We are the primary providers of NPR and public media content in east Central Florida. Position Summary

The Director of Development supports our mission by creating and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy to meet the organization’s revenue needs. The Director is a partner to the President in station fundraising efforts and collaborates regularly as part of the senior leadership team. The Director implements WMFE’s fundraising strategy with integrity, based on a solid understanding of the principles of ethical fundraising for a news organization.

Annual Salary Range: $80,000 – $100,000 depending on experience and qualifications

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Create and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to support the organization’s mission and growth, including annual development plans to maintain existing revenue streams and create new revenue opportunities. Work with the senior leadership team as an active participant in strategic planning and decision making for the organization as a
  • Departmental Leadership: Develop and manage actionable strategies, procedures and techniques for membership, major and planned giving, capital campaigns, corporate/foundation giving and grants, and special events. Ensure the integrity and accuracy of WMFE’s donor database.
  • Portfolio Management: Work with development staff and WMFE’s President to cultivate relationships with current and potential donors that result in new and ongoing support, significant leadership gifts, planned gifts and grants.
  • Recruitment, Training & Support: Recruit, manage and support development staff to achieve WMFE’s philanthropic goals, nurturing staff through team building, goal setting, mentorship, coaching, evaluation and recognition. Assess the department’s structure and establish effective roles, responsibilities, and workflows.
  • Collaboration: Foster an environment of cohesiveness and collaboration within the development department and across all station departments. Liaise regularly with WMFE’s sponsorship partner, Market Enginuity. Build successful relationships with industry colleagues in philanthropy and public media to stay informed of trends and best practices and to recommend sound policy and implement strategic revenue generating

Qualifications & Skills for Success

  • 5+ years of experience developing and implementing a wide variety of fundraising strategies in the nonprofit industry.
  • Familiarity with public media required. Development experience in public media and/or nonprofit journalism strongly preferred.
  • 3+ years of personnel management
  • Understanding of and enthusiasm for WMFE’s mission to provide public service journalism to Central
  • Advanced collaboration skills and high comfort level working as a team to make decisions and implement
  • Innovative thought leader who embraces new ideas and is able to employ strategies or tactics that push boundaries in fundraising and development.
  • Engaged and hands-on leader, willing to roll up their sleeves to provide direct
  • Demonstrated success in raising funds for an organization through the solicitation of major gifts, planned gifts, and/or grants.
  • Highly effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication with staff, donors, and other stakeholders, including active listening skills and clear articulation of the organization’s mission and value to the community.
  • Proficiency in the use of fundraising databases to develop strategy, set goals and analyze
  • Demonstrated ability to build and nurture a diverse workforce and to contribute to a workplace that reflects the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • High degree of independent thinking, self-motivation, creativity, and
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and achieve results.

Location and Working Conditions

This position is based in Orlando, Florida. The incumbent should reside in Central Florida, but remote work (i.e., work from home) options are available.

Much of this work is done in an indoor location. Some offsite work required for fundraising and events. There may be extended periods of working at a computer. This position must be available for meetings, trainings, and operational emergencies outside of normal working hours.
