Who we are:

WRCJ 90.9 FM Detroit, Michigan, is an independent, listener-supported public radio station with a classical and jazz music format. The Station broadcasts classical music daily from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and jazz music from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. WRCJ-FM is licensed to the Detroit Classical and Jazz

Educational Radio Foundation and is managed by Detroit Public Television. The Station is located inside the Detroit School of Arts in midtown Detroit, and has been broadcasting since 2005.

The Opportunity

We are actively seeking dynamic and diverse team member to join us in the role of On-Air Classical Music Host & Producer in Detroit, MI, in a hybrid work structure.

A WRCJ On-Air Classical Music Host & Producer is responsible for hosting a multi-hour classical music program in a knowledgeable, entertaining way.

The On-Air host may also conduct interviews and may or may not be required to select the music to be presented. The On-Air host will also actively foster audience engagement, drive fundraising efforts and build robust listener relationships.

Essential Functions

  • Announces the music played on WRCJ-FM and HD-1, with commentary and context.
  • Operates the studio audio board and related equipment.
  • Follows program logs and airs all required underwriting and promotional announcements.
  • Initials FCC program log to verify broadcast (or non-broadcast) of all logged material.
  • Conducts interviews with studio guests.
  • Actively asks listeners for contributions during station fundraising drives.
  • Stays current on new musical releases in classical music.
  • Promotes station events.
  • Acts as a visible spokesperson for the station at classical music events and other cultural events as required.
  • Serves as a community liaison and station advocate building opportunities and relationships that will help expand the station’s ability to serve its mission.
  • Monitors and responds to listener feedback; converse with listeners, interview guests, host live events.
  • Assists in maintaining the WRCJ music library.
  • Cultivates a passion for audience participation and fundraising initiatives.
  • Promotes audience engagement through relationship-building efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned include participation in station fundraising events.

Skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational ability with strong attention to details.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a focus on a “customer service” approach in both internal and external communications.

Qualifications

  • Exceptional knowledge of classical music.
  • Ability to operate audio board, automation system and related equipment such as CD players.
  • Knowledge of computer systems such as Audio Vault or Adobe Audition.
  • Bachelor’s degree in art, music, communication or similar discipline strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of on-air experience in commercial or public radio broadcasting preferred.
  • Demonstrate passion for audience engagement and fundraising.
  • On-air fundraising experience with the ability to execute effectively.
  • Non-profit experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated passion for arts and culture in the local community.
  • Excellent knowledge of on-air promotion strategies.
  • Familiarity with FCC rules and regulations.

Individual must be able to:

  • Individual must be able to and sit and speak well for extended periods of time.

Individual is exposed to a typical radio studio setting with computer equipment.
