North Carolina Public Radio WUNC is hiring two (2) Youth Mentors.

WUNC Radio provides quality news, information and entertainment programming to a broad listening audience that includes North Carolina, the United States and the world. WUNC serves North Carolinians from Greensboro to the Outer Banks through a network of seven stations, with a weekly cume of 300,000 listeners.

These positions are located in Chapel Hill & Durham, NC.

WUNC Youth Reporting is opening up our highly competitive and award-winning Youth Reporting Institute (YRI) – a radio journalism training program to all high school and college students, as well as non-students, ages 16-25. Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and all candidates of color (BI-POC) are encouraged to apply.

Position Description — As WUNC Youth Mentors, you will lead a team of young reporters through a summer program that teaches young people how to produce public radio-style reports about their communities. Youth Mentors will also assist in the creation and production of the participants’ digital content. Mentors work closely with the participants and WUNC’s Director of New Talent and Community Partnerships through the training, story pitch, reporting, and story production process. Salary & Work Schedule — This is a 100% Grant-funded position that will last approximately 10 weeks. The program will begin Monday, June 6th, and run until Friday, August 5th.  Participants should designate 10-15 hours a week to work towards a production deadline and are expected to join every training session. You will work in a hybrid format with daily meetings occurring Monday-Friday from 1pm to 5pm. Youth Mentors will be paid $17/hour.

Minimum Education & Experience Required:  High school diploma or equivalency and completion of a two-year technical school program in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
